Schooners vs. Panthers, Game 1

BOXSCORE

April 11, 2019
Panthers score three unanswered in second for Game 1 win

SUNRISE, Fla. – The Florida Panthers scored three unanswered goals in the second period, erasing a 2-0 deficit, for a 3-2 win in Game 1.

The Panthers lead the best-of-seven series 1-0.

“That was our game to lose,” said Schooners forward Marko Dano who had a goal and an assist in the contest. “We had strong start but took foot off gas pedal.”

Panthers defenceman Alex Petrovic, who scored two goals, said it was a big win for his team.

“It’s always huge to win the first game of a playoff series as it let us ride the momentum into the next game.”

Schooners defenceman Jason Demers said the team has to get back into playing a full 60-minutes.

“When you take a few minutes off it comes to bite you in the ***. We know we can play a full 60 and we have to get back to basics for Game 2.”

The Schooners opened the scoring at the 7:58 mark of the first period with Chris Wagner burying the franchise’s first ever playoff goal. Dano and Demers drew assists.

Dano gave the Schooners a 2-0 lead at 15:47. Demers and Wagner drew assists.

In the second period, Petrovic scored his first of two to cut the Schooners lead in half at 11:40. Just 16 seconds later, Petrovic tied the game.

Frank Vatrano gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead at the 17:26 mark.

James Reimer made 29 saves in the win for the Panthers as Anton Khudobin took the loss making 27 saves.

Schooners vs. Panthers, Game 2

April 13, 2019
Schooners use third period to beat Panthers to even series

SUNRISE, FLA – The Halifax Schooners scored three goals in a span of 2:27 in the third period to break open a scoreless score in a 3-1 Game 2 win over the Florida Panthers.

Jason Demers, Calle Jarnkrok and James Neal all found the back of the net early in the third period to secure the win for the Schooners, who even the best-of-seven series 1-1.

It is a big win, said Neal.

“To even up the series after a tough loss is always huge but now it’s time to get to work and prepare for Game 3.”

Jarnkrok’s goal at 2:29 into the third period would stand as the game winner. The Schooners forward said it was the best third period the team has played in a while.

“We just did all the little things right and the bounces went out way.”

Panthers defenceman Aaron Ekblad said it’s a tough loss for his squad.

“We had the chance to take a 2-0 series lead going onto the road and now it’s a best-of-five. We played good enough to win, we just couldn’t bury our scoring chances and they could and that was the difference.”

After a scoreless first two periods, the Schooners opened the scoring just 1:54 into the third period with Demers’ first of the playoffs. Just 35 seconds later, Jarnkrok scored his first of the post-season to give the Schooners a 2-0 lead. Neal made it 3-0 at 4:21 with his first of the playoffs.

The Panthers got on the board at 7:33 with Colton Sceviour scoring his first of the post-season.

Anton Khudobin made 29 saves in the win for Halifax. James Reimer went 18-for-21, to take the loss for Florida. Samuel Montembeault went 4-for-4 in relief of Reimer.

The series shifts to Halifax for Games 3 and 4 on April 15 and 17 respectfully.

Having the series shift to home ice is going to be huge, said Neal.

“It’s our chance to keep with how we are playing and take a 3-1 lead.

Schooners vs. Panthers, Game 3

April 15, 2019
Panthers take series lead with OT win

HALIFAX, N.S. - Mike Hoffman scored 6:13 into the first overtime to give the Florida Panthers a 4-3 win in Game 3.

The Panthers lead the best-of-seven series 2-1.

“It’s a big win for sure,” said Hoffman who finished with a goal and an assist. “Especially on the road if you can get a chance to take a lead in a playoff series.”

The Panthers erased a 3-2 deficit mid-way through the third period to eventually skate away with the win.

“We just did the little things right and the bounces went our way,” said Hoffman. “We battled back and it worked to our advantage.”

Halifax Schooners forward Calle Jarnkrok, who had a pair of goals in the contest, said the team took its foot off the gas pedal in the third period.

“That cost us and it was huge. We need to start playing a full 60, especially in the playoffs. That’s twice this series we have let a lead slip away from us.”

Jarnkrok opened the scoring with his second goal of the playoffs just 2:53 into the game with Jordan Weal and Michael Ferland drawing assists. The Panthers tied the game later at 17:04 with Vincent Trocheck finding the back of the net for the first time this post-season.

In the second period, Aleksander Barkov (1-2) gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead at 7:17 with his first of the playoffs.

Jarnkrok added his second of the game at 14:49 with assists going again to Ferland and Weal to tie the game.

James Van Riemsdyk gave the Schooners a 3-2 lead at 18:22 with his first goal of the playoffs.

In the third period, Aaron Ekblad’s point-shot found the back of the net at 10:52 to even things up before Hoffman scored in OT. Ekblad drew an assist on the OT winner, as well as Barkov.

Roberto Luongo, returning form injury, made 28 saves in the win for Florida. Anton Khudobin made 37 saves in the loss for Halifax.

Coach's Comments
Jody Shelley on Ferland-Weal-Jarnkrok line:
"That line has been banging and grinding for us all series long and I love seeing that. Oddly enough, they have been our best producing line so far. I like what I have been seeing from them and will try to keep them together and more time on ice."

Jody Shelley on trailing 2-1 in the series:
"Not surprised but it's definitely not where we want to be. A few blown leads has been the story. It would be a different story if we maintained the 2-0 lead in Game 1 but it's in the past and time to focus onto Game 4."

Jody Shelley on the performance of Anton Khudobin:
"Nothing but good things to say about Anton. He's been our guy since day one and he knows that. He's been tremendous for us giving us a chance to win every day."
