Re: [NHL19] We them Dragons - Dragons of Houston

TRADING DEADLINE

The trading deadline for the 2019-20 season was set on the 1st och March, and Houston Dragons were quite active as the deadline approached with five trades taking place between the 1st of February and the 1st of March of 2020. this was the second trading deadline this franchise have experienecd and it was buzzier than the first. Last year we made the deals in the months leading up to the dealine, but this year were different given our position in the standings and given that a playoff birth were possible. Our main target was a left wing for the first or second line, but we was not able to get that in the books. Instead we made som changes to the defensive line and the second line center position.

We'll now go through them, starting with the first one.

HOU acquires: 2nd rnd pick 2020 (ARI) & 3rd rnd pick 2020 (ARI) | ARI acquires: (RW) Jesper Fast, (D) Mackenzie Weegar and 4th rnd pick 2021 (HOU)

Arizona, who are at the top of the Western conference were looking for reinforcement before the playoffs and as Jesper Fast was a pending UFA with no interest in signing a new contract we were not that hard to deal with. They first offered to take Gustav Olofsson and a 4th in addition to Fast, but we tried to get them to take Weegar instead as Olofsson has better potential and they agreed to it. We got a 2nd rounder and a 3rd back, which will give us some ammunition going forward.

HOU acquires: (RW) Timo Meier | SJS acquires: (LW) Alex Killorn, 2nd round pick 2020 (ARI)

Would you look at that. The 2nd rounder we got from Arizona was used quickly when we targeted 23 year old right winger Timo Meier from San Jose. He's younger, better and have better potential than Fast who we sent to Arizona. And to get soon to be 31 year old Killorn with another 3 years left on his contract with a 5,1 million cap hit was a good deal in our eyes. Meier is a pending on a 4,15 million cap hit but has expressed his intention to stay with the team and expect a new deal to be announced shortly.

HOU acquires: (D) Sami Niku | WPG acquires: (D) Gustav Olofsson, 3rd rnd pick 2020 (ANA) & 4th rnd pick 2020 (HOU)

We earlier announced that New Jersey Devils tried to get Adam Henrique back, but we said no as we did not have any center depth behind Henrique. When Winnipeg Jets now came knocking on our door and asked about Henrique, we felt this deal was too good to say no to. We get a good defenseman for the third pairing in Kulikov (UFA) a 1st rounder in the draft next season and what looks to be an early 2nd rounder in this years draft. Henrique will be missed, but not for long.

HOU acquires: (C) Ryan Nugent-Hopkins | EDM acquires: 1st rnd pick 2021 (HOU) & 2nd rnd pick 2020 (VGK)

We were not done with Winnipeg. We originally tried to get Sami Niku in the Henrique deal but we could not come to terms with the Jets. A couple days after the first deal with Jets we found a trade that was good for all parts. We get a 23 year old defenseman with top 4 potential and sent away a depth defenseman who have been playing in the AHL all year and mid round picks in the upcoming draft. Niku is a pending RFA on his last year of a ELC but will like Meier be signed to a new deal as both parties want to continue together going forward.

HOU acquires: (C) Ryan Nugent-Hopkins | EDM acquires: 1st rnd pick 2021 (HOU) & 2nd rnd pick 2020 (VGK)

Except some minor deals around the leage where contenders went after rentals there were only one really big trade before the deadline passed. With just hours to the dealdine talks between us and Edmonton Oilers began to heat up. We're both in the playoff race but as we had traded away Henrique and our prospects is atleast a couple years from taking over the role as a second line center we explored the market. In Edmonton we found the former 1st overall pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who were behind both Connor McDavid and Leon Darisaitl on the depth chart. In Houston RNH will be the second line center behind Tyler Seguin and a good get to cover for Seguin if he gets injured. The soon to be 26 year old has one year left on his contract with a cap hit of 6 million us dollar.

February recap
Record: 9-4-0 | Total record: 25-23-1

So. We went on a run this month. It looked like the team responded well to the trades that were made during the month, Ryan Nugent Hopkins have not made his debut yet as the trade that were made for him occured after we hade played our last game of the month in the 3-2 win over Arizona on the road.

We started it off with a four game winning streak which ended with a 3-2 win over Florida, in a game where Tyler Seguin injured his left leg and were ruled out for two weeks which led to Adam Henrique to take over as first line center. After two losses and one win without Seguin we decided to give Jordan Kyrou a call up after impressive play for Alabama. And we did not regret it.

Kyrou started on the second line with Sven Andrighetto and Timo Meier. We took the lead late in the first before Florida came out and capitialized on a 5-on-4 and then Dennis Malgin gave them the lead with 2.53 left to play of the second period. This was when the Jordan Kyrou show started. He won the faceoff back to Ekholm who quickly passed it back to Kyrou who took the blue line, deked an oppenent and fired it top corner behind Roberto Luongo to tie the game. Was he finished with that? Nope. The line with Kyrou stayed out for the next faceoff and after some time in our own zone we started an break out which ended up with Kyrou gunning down the right wing before turning in towards the goal. On the back post Reid Boucher had found an open spot and tucked it home behind Luongo to give us the lead. The late goal gave us enough confidence to beat the NHL leading Florida Panthers on the road.

Seguin returned to the lineup when we beat Toronto at home, but was injured in the game and was ruled out for a couple more days and thereby missed the game against his old team Dallas. That did not hurt us though as we won 2-0. We ended the month with one loss and one win giving us a very good spot for March and the hunt for playoffs. Hopefully Ryan Nugent-Hopkins can add to our scoring and make us even more hard to deal with for opposition teams.
