Gregory Cassivi was born in Tuzla, Bosnia. While coming from humble backgrounds, Cassivi grew up on the ice, his father an ExtraLiga player himself (a defensemen), Adin Cassivi. Adin was only a bit player in the ExtraLiga, but the bloodlines were there. Cassivi dominated his hometown youth leagues, and ExtraLiga scouts had him on the radar as early as age 10. Cassivi had many offers, but signed with HC Sparta. At HC Sparta, Cassivi was ranked a top-10 prospect in the 2021 Entry Draft until a late push by scouts jolted him up the boards. Cassivi was selected first in the 2021 draft as a somewhat surprise.

In his rookie seaosn, Cassivi scored 22 goals, had 39 points in 52 games. By 2022/2023, Cassivi scored 49 goals and had 79 points in just his second season, earning NHL All-Star Honors and leading the league in goals.
