International Ice Hockey League

The NHL & NHLPA have been in intense back and forth discussions on another CBA. The current lockout has been going on for 8 months, and the season hangs in the balance of two greedy leaders. In late breaking news the NHL has folded, and players are scrambling to find a new place to play. One of the most global games is now without a platform to play and over 100 years of history is at risk of extinction, because two sides couldn't agree to a new agreement.

Enter the IIHL. A league broken up into four divisions, spanning across the globe to reach new audiences, and grow the game. The inaugural season will start shortly, after the league decides how to divvy up the assets; but the consensus is that the league will start with a re-draft of all the eligible players. The league will pool profits for an equal profit share allowing for teams to span across the globe in new markets.

Running the IIHL is a group of former professional hockey players: Ray Whitney, Mark Recchi, and Mike Sillinger. They bring many years of experience at the professional level and have teamed up with Space-X after they've developed a new type of Cryo-Plane that will be in testing phase for transcontinental flight. The new prototype will eventually be used for long distance space flight. The Cryo-X allows for temperature controlled cabin pressure that holds the feeling of time, so that long distances can be executed without jet lag. Team travel being covered by Space-X will mean that the IIHL teams will have more money to spend on players and assets including higher salary and living expenses without any escrow.

• Augusta Greens - Are named after the cities rich Golf history. The arena is named after Jack Nicklaus

• Helsinki Hellcats - Named their team after Stockholm named theirs, becoming yet another rival between Sweden & Finland.

• Moscow Rockets - Gets their namesake from Pavel Bure, aka the Russian Rocket. The team adopts international uniforms as well.

• Nova Scotia Voyageurs - Reprised from their days in the AHL winning 3 Calder Cups (72, 76, 77). Previously folded in 1984 and relocated to Sherbrooke.

• Richmond Robins - Another franchise reprised from the AHL. They operated between 1971-1976.

• Tacoma Rainiers - The owner also owns and operates a team of the same name in Triple-A baseball, an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Major sponsor is Rainier beer.

Week 1 - 1-1-0

October 2 - vs Paris (8-6 L)

Game Notes

1. Penalties - The Rockets accumulated 31 PIM and gave Paris 9 Powerplays including back to back 5 on 3's. The Athletiques scored 3 goals on the mad advantage.
   
2. Shots Shots Shots - Paris registered 63 shots on net, while Moscow had 55. Sam Bennett lead the way with 12 on net finishing one goal shy of a hattrick.
   
3. Barkov Tossed - The gameplan was to be aggressive throughout and with the lead captain Barkov took a run at Paris D Mark Giordano in the corner, levelling him and sending him to the dressing room. Barkov was assessed a 5 minute major and tossed from the game. The Athletiques would go on to score 5 goals thereafter to win the game.

October 4 - @ Paris (5-2 W)

Game Notes

1. Captain Leads the way - After his disaster of a game during the home opener, the real Aleksander Barkov showed up scoring three goals to lead the way to a 5-2 victory for the Rockets.
   
2. Allen Shines - Backup and fresh signee Jake Allen arrived in Paris to meet with the squad and got his first start for the Rockets. He stopped 20 of 22 shots wearing vintage equipment and an Andrei Trefilov style mask. "Yeah I just wanted to bring a vintage flair to the club, something I've done in the past so yeah, it worked out getting us a win"
   
3. 4th line Energy - Michael Ferland, Alex Texier, and Wayne Simmonds provided much needed spark to the lineup, seeing their ice time rise from previous game. Simmonds potted a goal from a Ferland feed, making it back to back games for Ferland to register a point.
   
4. Johnson Injured - Eric Johnson was hit in the first shift of the game by Max Pacioretty who caught him with his head down. Johnson didn't return to the lineup after spending time in the dark room for concussion protocol. Brock Nelson came to his defence, taking Pacioretty down with a series of rights. Post game evaluation confirms Johnson will miss time with a concussion. Jakub Zboril slots in for the injured Johnson.

vs Augusta (2-0-0)

1. Nelson Dominant - Brock Nelson followed up a strong game with another at home scoring three goals on five shots all coming at even strength.
   
2. Down Early - Augusta scored two goals on three shots to open the game but Allen stood strong stopping everything thrown at him until the Rockets tied the game.
   
3. Anisimov Injured - Artem Anisimov was taken down by Henri Jokiharju at the end of the first period and did not return. The Rockets moved Ferland to the C spot and he even saw some PP time at the position. Like Johnson in the previous game, Anisimov will miss some time with a concussion. Victor Rask will dress in the next game.

October 10
@ Stockholm (1-0-1)
6-1 W

1. Depth makes Difference - Debrusk, Nygard, Texier, and Baertschi all scored goals while pressure was high on Mantha and Barkov, the teams leaders in points. Jakub Zboril notched his first point of the season and was +4 on the night. Stockholm went young in their build during the draft and the inexperienced defence were exposed frequently by the Rockets. Down 2-0, Shea Weber picked a fight with Barkov to spark the Blizzard Dogs, and although he won he did leave the game with a broken nose. Jalen Chatfield, Victor Soderstom, Noah Juulsen, Noah Dobson, and Philip Broberg were left to deal with the Rockets.
   
2. Jarry Shelled - Tristan Jarry got the start for the Blizzard Dogs and posted a .700 save percentage, he was called out by team captain Jack Eichel "It's going to be a long season if this is the kind of effort we get out of the goaltender"
   
3. Kaprizov Benched - The Rockets had a stranglehold on the Dogs in the goals department, and were one mistake shy of notching the first shutout of the young season. Kaprizov turned the puck over, which led to a scoring chance that and didn't get back into position quick enough to defend the goal. He finished -1 on the night. Coach Goertzen ripped into his star prospect on the bench but is not willing to remove him from the next game. "He is young, he will learn. He cost our goalie a shutout, but we got the win. We'll practice hard tomorrow and head into the next game focused".

October 12
vs Frankfurt (2-2-0)
15-3 W

1. Niskanen Blew It - Matt Niskanen took a run at whipping boy Kaprizov, and gets tossed out of the game. At the time it was 2-1 for the Rockets, and they score 7 goals on the major penalty. Alex Edler net 5 points most coming on the man advantage.
   
2. Price Chased / Campbell not much better - Carey Price allowed 6 goals on 15 shots and was eventually replaced by Jack Campbell who did not fare any better. Campbell allowed 9 goals on 30 shots and was absolutely peppered on the man advantage.
   
3. Three straight Hatty's - Kirill Kaprizov scored a hat trick and got an assist for four points on the night, just one game after getting benched. Coach Goertzen when asked by media simply replied with a wink. Kaprizov scored all three goals on the powerplay, making the third straight game that the Rockets registered a hat trick.
