Re: I Love That Dirty Water - Boston Bruins (NHL 20)
Bruins Beat: Regular Season and Playoff Recap and Player Grades
With the Bruins season coming to a disappointing end in the Eastern Conference Finals, it's time to look at each player and areas where the Bruins may be able to improve before they jump into the offseason. Of course, these grades are based on the individual player and what was expected of them before the regular season and playoffs began. FORWARDS Brad Marchand RS - 45 goals, 50 assists, 95 points, +44, 164 hits P - 9 goals, 5 assists, 14 points, +5 - There's no question that Brad Marchand was the Bruins' MVP this regular season. He set a career high in goals with 45 and his 95 points are the second highest total in his career. In the playoffs, he scored the winning goal in Game 7 against Tampa Bay in double overtime. Unfortunately, he was unable to find the back of the net against Philadelphia, which played a big factor in the Bruins' elimination. Grade: Regular Season - A+, Playoffs - A Patrice Bergeron RS - 32 goals, 52 assists, 84 points, +42, 57.8 FO% P - 7 goals, 10 assists, 17 points, +7, 68.6 FO% - There's not much else you can say about Patrice Bergeron. All he did this year was set a career high in points and tie his career high in goals. Bergy was also terrific in the postseason, with a ridiculous face-off percentage of 68.6% and 17 points, the most on the team. He nearly brought the Bruins back by himself in Game 4, and he also scored what should have been the game winner in Game 5 before the Bruins collapsed in the third. Grade: Regular Season - A+, Playoffs - A+ David Pastrnak RS - 29 goals, 44 assists, 73 points, +31, 10.2 S% P - 6 goals, 7 assists, 13 points, +7, 7.3 S% - It was a disappointing season all around for Pastrnak, who never really got over a slow start. While he finished with a respectable 29 goals and 73 points, many were projecting a big year from the Bruins' young sniper, and it didn't quite materialize that way. He was even more snake bit in the playoffs, leading the team in shots on goal but finding the back of the net just six times. Grade: Regular Season - B, Playoffs - C+ Charlie Coyle RS - 15 goals, 38 assists, 53 points, +25, 46.6 FO%, 122 hits P - 5 goals, 3 assists, 8 points, +3, 50.6 FO%, 23 hits - Coyle was given the task of replacing David Krejci this year as the Bruins' second line centre. He was up to the task - at times. Like Krejci, Coyle suffered from a seemingly endless revolving door at right wing, with several different players getting a look before the team settled on Anders Bjork. Coyle was a physical presence all year, but it would be nice to see him increase his scoring output next season - hopefully with a more consistent lineup around him. Grade: Regular Season - B+, Playoffs - B Jake DeBrusk RS - 23 goals, 18 assists, 41 points, +14, 57 hits P - 6 goals, 2 assists, 8 points, +1, 3 GWG - DeBrusk continues to be a frustrating player for the Bruins. He has so much potential, and shows it at times (like in Game 5 vs Philadelphia), but he still has too many nights when he's a passenger. This is perhaps best summed up by his three game-winning goals in the playoffs, but only 57 hits in the regular season - the B's need him to be more of a factor on a nightly basis and to help Charlie Coyle establish a bonafide second line. Grade: Regular Season - B-, Playoffs - B+ Anders Bjork RS - 19 goals, 17 assists, 36 points, +13, 10 PP points P - 5 goals, 3 assists, 8 points, +3 - Bjork may be the bright spot of the Bruins season, as he finally established himself as an NHL caliber player. Before this season, he had never reached double digits in goals, and his 36 points was nearly double his previous career high. Bjork was solid if not spectacular in the postseason, and should play a big role on the team next year. Grade: Regular Season - A-, Playoffs - B+ Sean Kuraly RS - 15 goals, 16 assists, 31 points, +1, 56.1 FO% P - 0 goals, 4 assists, 4 points, -4, 54.7 FO% - It was a strange season for Kuraly, who wasn't terrible by any means, but showed he likely belongs as the fourth line centre. Bruce Cassidy gave Kuraly a full year to establish himself as the third line pivot, but he and his linemates were overmatched throughout the playoffs, particularly in the series against Philadelphia. Kuraly is an RFA this offseason - expect the team to look to upgrade at centre and shift him back to the fourth line. Grade: Regular Season - C+, Playoffs - C- Tyler Toffoli RS - 20 goals, 34 assists, 54 points, +15, 13 PP points P - 4 goals, 4 assists, 8 points, -2 - The Bruins big free agent signing was good. He scored 20 goals for the first time since 2017, and his 54 points were the most since 2015. The team would have liked to seen more from him in the postseason, but he seems to be the perfect fit for the third line right wing position - especially if the team can upgrade at centre. Grade: Regular Season - A-, Playoffs - B Wayne Simmonds RS - 26 games, 8 goals, 7 assists, 15 points, -2, 31 hits P - 3 goals, 1 assists, 4 points, -1, 41 hits - The Bruins have been linked to Simmonds for years, and they went out and got him at the trade deadline to help boost their third line and physical play. It wasn't a failure by any means, but it didn't work as well as expected. Simmonds was terrific down the stretch for the B's, helping them secure first overall, but wasn't much of a factor in the playoffs (although his physical play was a big plus). Granted, it was his injury in Game 5 that forced Ondrej Kase up to the third line - and we all know what happened there. Still, expect the Bruins to move on from Simmonds in the offseason. Grade: Regular Season - B+, Playoffs - B Chris Wagner RS - 7 goals, 12 assists, 19 points, -4, 48.1 FO% P - 1 goal, 2 assists, 3 points, -8 - Wagner was overmatched as the fourth line centre this year, particularly in the playoffs where it got so bad that Bruce Cassidy essentially benched the line for the final three games of the Flyers series. The team didn't have much of a choice, however. Wagner is still a useful penalty killer, and proved that he can hold his own in the face-off circle, but he can't carry a line by himself. Grade: Regular Season - C-, Playoffs - D Karson Kuhlman RS - 40 games, 5 goals, 5 assists, 10 points, -1 P - 2 goals, 2 points, -7, 1 GWG - Kuhlman was certainly a bright spot for the team when he returned from injury midway through the season, and he sparked some life into the fourth line which was struggling at the time. He also scored two huge goals in the playoffs, although he struggled defensively and was eventually pulled out of the lineup in the Flyers series. He'll have a chance to fight for a spot on the fourth line, but will need to show a bit more if he wants to move up in the lineup. Grade: Regular Season - B-, Playoffs - C Ondrej Kase RS - 6 goals, 18 assists, 24 points, +7, 3 GWG P - 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 points, -10 - Kase was essentially a throw-in to the David Backes trade a few years ago, and while the Bruins had high hopes for his play, it hasn't worked out that way. Kase was relegated to the fourth line midway through the year and never made it off. He was also brutal in the playoffs, finishing with a team worst -10 plus/minus. It will likely be his last season in Boston. Grade: Regular Season - D+, Playoffs - F DEFENSEMEN Charlie McAvoy RS - 11 goals, 23 assists, 34 points, +29, 24:00 TOI, 152 hits P - 0 goals, 6 assists, 6 points, +3, 32 shots, 25:37 TOI, 47 hits - McAvoy showed some more offensive upside this season, setting a career high in goals and points. He also led the Bruins in ice-time in both the regular season and playoffs as he establishes himself as the Bruins true #1 defenseman. It will be intriguing to see if he can continue to increase his offensive numbers while remaining defensively responsible. Grade: Regular Season - A, Playoffs - A Zdeno Chara RS - 6 goals, 26 assists, 32 points, +27, 266 hits P - 0 goals, 6 assists, 6 points, +5, 12 PIM, 99 hits - It was another strong year from Big Z who continues to prove that Father Time has nothing on him. Chara dished out a league-leading 266 hits and put up 32 points, his most since 2015. Chara said immediately after the Bruins that he would return for another season - the question becomes when will his age finally start to show? Grade: Regular Season - A, Playoffs - A- Brandon Carlo RS - 1 goal, 13 assists, 14 points, +25, 20:18 TOI, 163 hits P - 0 goals, 5 assists, 5 points, +4, 41 hits - Brandon Carlo has emerged as one of the best number three defensemen in the league - and will likely be a staple of the Bruins' second defense pair for the next decade. While he doesn't produce much offensively, Carlo is one of the best in his own end, as evident by his +25 rating. He was also a physical force this year with 163 hits. Grade: Regular Season - A-, Playoffs - A Torey Krug RS - 12 goals, 28 assists, 40 points, +14, 8 PP points P - 2 goals, 6 assists, 8 points, +5, 1 PP point - The Bruins took a risk by making Krug the highest paid player on their team, especially considering the depth they had on the back end. It may have backfired. Krug wasn't terrible, but his 40 points was his lowest total since 2014. His lack of production on the power play has to be the most concerning issue. Krug could potentially be a trade target in the offseason. Grade: Regular Season - B, Playoffs - B Matt Grzelcyk RS - 9 goals, 22 assists, 31 points, +18, 4 PP points, 17:42 TOI P - 0 goals, 2 assists, 2 points, -12 - It was truly a tale of two seasons for Grzelcyk. Grz was terrific during the regular season, setting a career high in goals, points, and time on ice. In the playoffs, however, he was a bit of a disaster, failing to find the back of the net and finishing with an ugly -12 plus/minus. The Bruins hope that the acquisition of RFA Ryan Pulock, who will join the team next year, will help him out in his own end. Grade: Regular Season - A, Playoffs - D Jeremy Lauzon RS - 2 goals, 7 assists, 9 points, +14, 79 hits P - 0 goals, 2 assists, 2 points, -8, 22 hits - It was a good first full season for Lauzon, who proved he can play the physical game with 79 hits in the regular season. Lauzon struggled against Tampa Bay in the playoffs, however, and found himself relegated to the press box. With the addition of Pulock and the return of Zdeno Chara, there may not be room in the top six for Lauzon next year. Grade: Regular Season - B+, Playoffs - C Connor Clifton RS - 28 games, 2 goals, 1 assist, 3 points, +2, 12 hits P - 4 games, -2 - Clifton continues to prove that, despite his size, he can be a useful contributor on the back end. He'll likely never be more than a #6 or depth defenseman, bu that's a useful role. Unfortunately for Clifton, with Ryan Pulock likely joining the team next season and Urho Vaakanainen waiting in the wings, he may be the odd man out next year. Grade: Regular Season - B-, Playoffs - C GOALTENDERS Tuukka Rask RS - 56 games, 38-17-1, 5 shutouts, .921%, 2.40 GAA P - 16 games, 9-7, 0 shutouts, .906%, 3.00 GAA - The Tuukka Rask problem continues for the Bruins. He's a very, very good goaltender - as evident by his very strong regular season. He also has the unfortunate label of failing to deliver in the playoffs, and while he had moments where he was terrific, he also had moments when he was far from it. Rask will be a free agent this offseason, and it will be very interesting to see if the Bruins decide to resign him - or if they let him test free agency. Grade: Regular Season - A, Playoffs - D Jaroslav Halak RS - 27 games, 17-8-0, 3 shutouts, .917%, 2.43 GAA P - 2 games, 0-0, .900%, 4.28 GAA - Halak had a solid regular season for the Bruins, and had he performed well in the playoffs may have gotten a start or two. Alas, he struggled in his two appearances, and didn't give Bruce Cassidy confidence that he could win them a game. Halak will likely be bought out this offseason with the acquisition of Cal Peterson. Grade: Regular Season - B, Playoffs - C NEEDS 1. Third Line Centre - This has to be priority number one for the Bruins. Charlie Coyle proved he can handle the second line role, but Sean Kuraly wasn't ready for the third line. The Bruins need a veteran, proven centre who can chip in offensively and be responsible defensively, allowing Kuraly to move back to the fourth line. 2. #5 Defenseman - The Bruins likely already have this with Ryan Pulock, who they acquired at the trade deadline but couldn't play because he elected to sit out the year as an RFA. They'll need to come to terms to a deal with him, but he could be the perfect compliment to Matt Grzelyck on the third pair. 3. Goalie of the Future - Is it Cal Peterson? Possibly. But he isn't ready for this season. With Jaroslav Halak and Tuukka Rask both approaching their late 30s, the Bruins need to figure out their goaltending situation in a hurry. Expect them to draft one, but don't be surprised if they make a big trade. |

Re: I Love That Dirty Water - Boston Bruins (NHL 20)
Bruins Beat: Bruins bring in Paul Stastny to boost third line
The loss of David Krejci in the expansion draft hurt the Bruins big time last year. Sure, Charlie Coyle was able to jump into the second line centre role without skipping a beat, but Sean Kuraly and Chris Wagner both struggled to anchor the third and fourth line. GM Don Sweeney hopes to have rectified that with a big offseason acquisition. The Bruins acquired Paul Stastny from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Zach Senyshyn, Brett Ritchie, and the New York Islanders third-round pick (acquired in the Ryan Pulock trade). The Bruins immediately signed Stastny to a one-year deal worth three million. Stastny had a rebound year last season, scoring 21 goals (his highest total since 2014) and tallying 59 points. With Vegas missing the playoffs, however, and looking to get younger down the middle, Stastny was made available. He'll immediately jump on the Bruins third line, likely beside Tyler Toffoli and potentially Jack Studnicka, and receive power play time (he racked up 18 power play points last year). It's a disappointing ending for Senyshyn who's career never took off in Boston. He played 24 games last year and scored three goals but was also a -4 and struggled in his own end. DRAFT Pick #86 - C Jonathon Saunders (6'1, 183, USA) Pick #158 - G Sergey Latypov (6'0, 192, Russia) Pick #190 - D Dillon Bogosian (6'2, 203, USA) Pick #222 - LW Elliott Sakic (6'1, 180, USA) - Without a first- or second-round pick, it was all about depth for the Bruins, who picked up some promising but certainly developmental players. Perhaps the most exciting prospect is Bogosian, who comes from New England and could become a physical beast in his own end. The Bruins also took a flyer on a goaltender - Latypov has potential but there are some concerns that he may not leave Russia to come play in the NHL. RE-SIGN Zdeno Chara - 1 year, 4.6 million per year Anders Bjork - 3 years, 2.6 million per year Sean Kuraly - 2 years, 2.2 million per year Ryan Pulock - 4 years, 4.4 million per year - Big Z returns for another year at a very young 43 years of age. Bjork is rewarded with a nice pay bump, while the Bruins may have overpaid for Kuraly, considering he's likely a fourth line player next year. The big news, however, is that the team was able to come to terms with Pulock, who sat out last season with the Islanders before he was moved at the trade deadline. FREE AGENCY Kyle Clifford - 2 years, 1.4 million per year Tuukka Rask - 4 years, 9.1 million per year - Controversy to say the least. Kyle Clifford could upset the apple card and ruin everything the Bruins have tried to accomplish this offseason. Okay, obviously not. Clifford should be a great addition to the new look fourth line that head coach Bruce Cassidy hopes will be much more physical this year. The real controversy is over Tuukka Rask. Rask turned down several offers from the Bruins to test free agency, before the team finally relented and offered him the deal he wanted - four years at over nine million per year. The deal makes Rask one of the highest paid goaltenders in the league and the highest paid player on the Bruins - and public enemy number one in Boston. The team failed to develop an adequate succession plan to Rask and while they were intrigued by some of the options on the market, including Vezina Trophy winner Frederick Anderson, felt like Rask was truly the best option.

Re: I Love That Dirty Water - Boston Bruins (NHL 20)
Bruins Beat: Season Preview
Forwards First Line Brad Marchand - Patrice Bergeron - Jack Studnicka - The rookie gets the call on the top line. Studnicka was impressive last season, and although he didn't have a great preseason, is going to get a chance to prove he can play in the NHL. Rather than bury him on the fourth line, Bruce Cassidy has decided to play him with stars Marchand and Bergeron. How long will the Perfection Line stay split up? It could depend on the play of Studnicka. Second Line Jake DeBrusk - Charlie Coyle - David Pastrnak - Cassidy may be a fan of our blog, because this is basically what we suggested in our year end review. Coyle needs more help on the second line, and it's unclear if that help will come from DeBrusk who continues to be inconsistent. Perhaps a solid 20-game stretch with Pasta on his wing will help - and may help get Pasta going as well. Third Line Anders Bjork - Paul Stastny - Tyler Toffoli - This line could make or break the 2021 Bruins. If it clicks, it may be the best third line in the league, and give the Bs three genuine scoring lines. Bjork had an excellent year last year, his first full season as an NHLer, and Toffoli was solid on the right side. Stastny has the ability to make them both better. Fourth Line Chris Wagner - Sean Kuraly - Kyle Clifford - The Bruins rebuilt their fourth line in the offseason, adding the physical Clifford and moving Kuraly back down to the fourth line from the third. This gives the line a great defensive centre and two wingers who love to throw their weight around. If this line can be counted on as a true checking line, it will allow Cassidy to roll four lines all season long - including the playoffs. Extra Karson Kuhlman - Kuhlman will start the year as the 13th forward, although he'll likely find himself in the lineup very soon - whether due to injury or just to keep other guys fresh. Don't be surprised if you see him and Clifford swap in and out depending on the matchup. Defense First Pair Zdeno Chara - Charlie McAvoy - The top pair from the past three seasons returns once again. Eventually McAvoy will have to get used to playing with another partner, but that is at least another year away (barring injury). Second Pair Torey Krug - Brandon Carlo - The Bruins also return their second pair for the third consecutive season. There were some rumours that Krug may be moved in the offseason, but that didn't come to pass. The Bruins hope to get a rebound year from Krug who was good but not great last season after signing a big contract extension. The team also hopes to get a little more offense from Carlo. Third Pair Matt Grzelcyk - Ryan Pulock - Pulock is the big addition that the Bruins are extremely excited about, especially after a very strong preseason. Grz was terrific last year, until he fell apart in the playoffs. Hopefully a bigger, more physical partner will help his game out as well. Extras Jeremy Lauzon - Urho Vaakanainen - The B's elect to keep both youngsters, at least to start the year. Lauzon was solid last season and has earned the right to be on the team, while Vaakanainen was terrific in preseason and training camp - again. This kid needs to be in the top six sooner rather than later. Don't be surprised if an early season trade happens to free up a spot for him. Goalies Tuukka Rask - Cal Petersen - The talk of the year will be Rask. Many feel like that the Bruins overpaid him and gave him too many years, especially after a mediocre at best playoff. The team will give Petersen a lot of looks in the regular season to see if he is the goaltender of the future. Might there be a trade in the works? Power Play #1 Paul Stastny - Patrice Bergeron - Brad Marchand Torey Krug - David Pastrnak - The Bruins power play wasn't as strong as it had been in recent years, and they'll look to give it a spark with Stastny who was terrific last year for Vegas on their man advantage unit. Power Play #2 Anders Bjork - Charlie Coyle - Jake DeBrusk Charlie McAvoy - Jack Studnicka - The second line of the last half of last season and the playoffs reunites for the power play, with McAvoy and the rookie on the backend. This could be a genius move - or a disaster, given the inexperience on the ice. Penalty Kill #1 Patrice Bergeron - Brad Marchand Zdeno Chara - Brandon Carlo - The top unit returns. The Bruins led the league in shorthanded goals last season, with Marchand particularly lethal. Chara and Carlo are as good a shutdown unit as there is in the league. Penalty Kill #2 Sean Kuraly - Anders Bjork Ryan Pulock - Charlie McAvoy - The second unit looks drastically different from last year. Pulock gets the call alongside McAvoy, which should be an improvement from Grz last season. Cassidy is also giving Bjork a chance, hoping his speed translates to more shorthanded opportunities.

Re: I Love That Dirty Water - Boston Bruins (NHL 20)
Bruins Beat: New look Bruins get off to slow start (October 12th - October 24th)
The new look fourth line gave the Bruins their first goal of the 2021 season when Sean Kuraly buried a shot after taking a pass from newcomer Kyle Clifford. Results WIN 5-3 vs New York Islanders LOSE 3-1 vs Ottawa Senators WIN 3-2 vs New Jersey Devils WIN 3-2 vs Dallas Stars LOSE 3-2 @ Florida Panthers WIN 3-0 @ Anaheim Ducks LOSE 3-0 vs Pittsburgh Penguins Record: 4-3-0 (Overall - 4-3-0, 8 points), 5th in Atlantic Spotlight Game - 3-2 loss at Florida Panthers
It won't make up for the sweep from last year's playoffs, but the Florida Panthers got a little bit of revenge on the Bruins with big early season victory this past week. The story of the Bruins and Panthers series last year was comebacks. The Bruins came from behind in every single game. This time it was Florida's turn. The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from David Pastrnak and Ryan Pulock (more on him later), but were unable to hold on as the Panthers dominated the third period, eventually scoring the game-tying and game-winning goal, courtesy of Brandon Gallagher and Henrik Borgstrom. Newly acquired power forward Wayne Simmonds immediately made his presence known in Boston with four goals in his first six games. Other Notes... - It was a good opening debut for a number of new Bruins, as Kyle Clifford, Ryan Pulock, and Jack Studnicka all registered points in Boston's 5-3 win over the Islanders. - It took just two games for Brandon Carlo to score his first goal of the season - something he didn't do until March last year. Could this be a sign that he's in for a bigger offensive season? Unfortunately, it was the only goal for the B's in a 3-1 loss to Ottawa. - The Bruins were pretty lucky when it came to injuries last season, but they'll be without Zdeno Chara for the next few games, at least, as he left the game against Ottawa with a concussion. Urho Vaakanainen will jump in to take his spot until he returns. - The Bruins look like they are going to go with a goaltender rotation, at least early on, as Tuukka Rask and Cal Petersen rotated each of the first seven games of the year. Petersen was excellent in a 3-2 win over Dallas, but did lose two of his three starts. David Pastrnak opened the scoring for the Bruins against the Panthers, but they ultimately lost 3-2 after leading 2-0 midway through the game. Who's Hot Brad Marchand - Marchy picked up right where he left off from last season. Despite a new linemate in Jack Studnicka, Marchand put up seven points in the first seven games of the year, including three goals, two of which were game-winners. Ryan Pulock - A fantastic debut for the new Bruins' blueliner. Pulock was a rock in his own end, and is third on the team with 14 hits already. He also scored two goals and added two assists. Perhaps best of all - he scored the game-winning goal against the New York Islanders, his former team. Who's Not Anders Bjork - Zero points, a -1 rating, and just nine shots in seven games isn't the start to the year Bjork wanted after a terrific season last year. There are some concerns that Bjork can't play outside of the top six, and his early struggles to connect on the third line may support this. Chris Wagner - Wagner is a fan favourite, but his struggles continue despite a new look fourth line. He has yet to record a point and currently sits at -4 on the year. What's on tap? The big game to look for is the Buffalo Sabres, who are currently 6-0-0. The Sabres tend to start hot before falling off significantly, but could this be the year that they finally make the jump to the next level? Charlie McAvoy ties the game against the Islanders at three late in the second period. |

Re: I Love That Dirty Water - Boston Bruins (NHL 20)
Bruins Beat: Bruins continue to putter along with inconsistent play (October 25th - November 7th)
Zdeno Chara continues to throw his weight around, showing no ill effects from his concussion - or from being 43. Results LOSE 5-3 @ Winnipeg Jets WIN 5-1 vs New York Rangers WIN 4-1 vs Calgary Flames WIN 4-2 @ Los Angeles Kings LOSE 5-4 @ Buffalo Sabres LOSE 3-2 (OT) @ Arizona Coyotes Record: 3-2-1 (Overall - 7-5-1, 15 points), 5th in Atlantic Spotlight Game - 5-4 loss at Buffalo Sabres
The 10-1-0 Buffalo Sabres entered Tuesday's game against the Bruins with something to prove. After all, the Bruins won the Atlantic Division last year and were in the Stanley Cup Finals the year before that. It was a measuring stick game for the Sabres - and they delivered. The Sabres jumped out to early leads of 2-0 and 3-1 before Boston came roaring back. David Pastrnak cut the lead to 3-2 with just over two minutes remaining in the second, and Big Z, returning from his concussion, tied it just moments later. The teams traded goals in the third period until the Sabres were able to take the lead for good thanks to a beautiful goal by Jack Eichel, his second of the game and third point of the night. While no one hands out awards in November, it's a great win for the Buffalo Sabres who look to prove that they belong with the big boys like the Bruins, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Tampa Bay Lightning. Tyler Toffoli continues to light up his former team, scoring his first two goals of the year in the Bruins' 4-2 win over the Kings. Other Notes... - The Bruins looked to get more physical in the offseason after being pushed around by the Flyers in the Eastern Conference Final. It wasn't evident against the Jets. Boston took a 3-2 lead into the third period but fell apart, managing just two shots on goal in the final frame while the Jets scored three unanswered to take the win. - The team rallied in a big way after a disappointing loss to the Jets by hammering the New York Rangers 5-1. The second line of Jake DeBrusk, Charlie Coyle, and David Pastrnak was unstoppable, scoring four of the team's five goals and combining for seven points. - Tyler Toffoli continues to scorch his former team. After scoring several times against the Kings last year, Toffoli scored his first two goals of the season in the Bruins 4-2 win over Los Angeles. The third line continues to struggle, but this was a positive development. - A disappointing loss in overtime against Arizona to end this two-week stretch, although rookie Jack Studnicka did pick up his fourth goal of the season late in the third period to tie the game at two. Studnicka has struggled at times, but does have four goals and four assists so far. David Pastrnak opened the scoring for the Bruins against the Panthers, but they ultimately lost 3-2 after leading 2-0 midway through the game. Who's Hot David Pastrnak - For whatever reason, David Pastrnak couldn't get it going last year, despite leading the team in shots on goal. That hasn't been the case this year. Pasta put up five goals and eight points during this stretch, and already has seven goals on the year - a total that took him over two months to reach last year. Charlie Coyle - Putting Pasta with Coyle seems to have done wonders for both players, at least so far. Coyle was excellent last season but the team was looking for a little more offense from their second line centre. He put up seven points during this stretch and scored his first three goals of the year. Charlie McAvoy - McAvoy seems to be going for his first Norris Trophy. Not only is he leading the team in time on ice, again, he also had a huge two-week stretch offensively, with seven points in six games, including two goals. Who's Not Paul Stastny - The big off-season acquisition hasn't worked out very well so far. Stastny was supposed to give the third line more of an offensive presence, but that hasn't been the case so far, as he has just two points on the year, and hasn't scored in 11 games. The B's need Stas to be better, as both Tyler Toffoli and Anders Bjork are struggling as well. What's on tap? All eyes will be on the rematch with the Flyers in Philadelphia next week as the Bruins look for revenge against the team that knocked them out last year before eventually winning the Stanley Cup. Karson Kuhlman, filling in for the injured Chris Wagner, scores his first goal of the season against the Sabres.

Re: I Love That Dirty Water - Boston Bruins (NHL 20)
Bruins Beat: Bruins begin to find their stride but still can't find a solution to their Philly problem (November 8th - November 21st)
David Pastrnak celebrates the game-winning goal against the Blue Jackets. He currently leads the team with 12 goals on the season. Results WIN 2-1 @ San Jose Sharks WIN 4-2 vs Columbus Blue Jackets WIN 3-0 vs Vegas Golden Knights LOSE 6-2 @ Philadelphia Flyers WIN 4-3 (SO) vs Detroit Red Wings LOSE 2-1 vs Nashville Predators Record: 4-2-0 (Overall - 11-7-1, 23 points), 4th in Atlantic Spotlight Game - 4-2 win vs Columbus Blue Jackets
You can always expect a good game from the Blue Jackets under John Tortorella, and Wednesday's night showdown was just that. Both teams had an unusual intensity for an early November game, with the game featuring a combined 41 hits, 84 shots, and six goals. The Bruins were responsible for four of those goals, two of which came in the third period by David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand. Pasta was nearly unstoppable, picking up the game-winning goal, an assist on Marchand's goal, and finished the game with a +4 rating. Tuukka Rask was the story of the game, however. The Bruins received a lot of criticism for resigning Rask after last year's poor performance against the Flyers in the Eastern Conference Finals, and he's been average at best so far this year. But he was terrific against the Blue Jackets. Rask made 44 saves, including 18 in the third period, to preserve the 4-2 victory for Boston. Tyler Toffoli continues to light up his former team, scoring his first two goals of the year in the Bruins' 4-2 win over the Kings. Other Notes... - Great start to the week for the B's with the win over the Blue Jackets sandwiched between a 2-1 win over San Jose and a 3-0 win over Vegas. Pastrnak and Marchand continue to be a lethal 1-2 punch, scoring five of the team's nine goals. - A hard reality check for the Bruins came at the hand of the Flyers, who again dominated Boston from start to finish. Rask was dreadful - he allowed four goals on 12 shots and was pulled early in the second period. The guys in front of him weren't much better, however, as Philadelphia scored two shorthanded goals on the same Bruins' power play. The B's second line of Jake DeBrusk, Charlie Coyle, and David Pastrnak has been terrific this season - but they were an ugly -12 against the Flyers. - Big win over a good Detroit team to right the ship after the poor showing against Philly. Ryan Pulock scored late in the third, his fourth of the season, to tie the game at three, and Brad Marchand scored the game-winner in the shootout. - Line change alert! We'll touch on this down below, but the third line of Anders Bjork, Paul Stastny, and Tyler Toffoli simply hasn't worked so far. Head coach Bruce Cassidy gave them a solid 20 or so game stretch to find chemistry, but it wasn't happening. Bjork will jump up to the first line alongside Marchand and Patrice Bergeron, while Jack Studnicka, who has played very well so far as a rookie, will move down to the third line. Brad Marchand gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead over the Flyers early in the first, but Philly would go on to score the next four goals en route to a 6-2 drubbing. Who's Hot Brad Marchand - Marchy came up just short in the Hart Trophy race last season. He's looking to change that this year. Marchand had an unreal two week stretch, scoring four goals and adding two assists, while also scoring the winning shootout goal against the Red Wings. David Pastrnak - Marchand's biggest competition may be his own teammate. Pasta has been on a tear since the season started, and it continued during this past stretch as he scored five more goals, giving him a team-leading 12 on the season. Who's Not Third Line - There were high hopes that the third line of Bjork, Stastny, and Toffoli would be one of the best in the league. Unfortunately, they were never able to click. All three players have the same stat line - two goals and three assists in 19 games, and have combined for a poor -8 rating. As a result, the line has been split up, with more changes potentially coming soon. What's on tap? A five-game road trip starting in Colorado will be a good test for the B's, who other than the ugly performance against Philly had a very strong two-week stretch. The big test will be the game in Tampa Bay, who currently lead the league with a 14-4-1 record. The Bruins need Paul Stastny to get going - and soon. Hopefully a lineup shuffle will spark some life into their free agent signing. |
