Lions Stay Perfect With Thrilling Win Over Eagles
By Tim Twentyman | Detroit Free Press
PHILADELPHIA — The Detroit Lions survived their toughest test of the season, holding off the Philadelphia Eagles 34-28 on Sunday night at Lincoln Financial Field to stay unbeaten at 10-0.
Jared Goff bounced back from two interceptions to throw for 346 yards and three touchdowns, including two long strikes to Jameson Williams in the first quarter that set the tone. Williams finished with 135 yards on five catches, continuing to establish himself as Detroit’s deep threat.
Jahmyr Gibbs added balance on the ground with 86 rushing yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown, while kicker Jake Bates drilled two long field goals in the third quarter to help the Lions keep control.
Philadelphia (7-3) clawed back behind Jalen Hurts, who threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns, including a late 4-yard score to Grant Calcaterra that cut the lead to six with just over two minutes remaining. But Detroit’s defense stood tall, forcing Hurts into short throws over the middle as the clock ran out.
“Man, that was a fight,” head coach Dan Campbell said. “We knew coming in here it wasn’t gonna be easy. But our guys played with grit, made big plays when it mattered, and found a way to finish.”
Defensively, captain Alex Anzalone recorded a team-high 20 tackles, while third-year linebacker Jack Campbell added 12 stops and a sack. Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph each came up with critical open-field tackles to limit explosive plays.
Despite losing the turnover battle (2-1) and trailing in time of possession, Detroit’s explosive offense proved too much. The Lions finished with 466 yards of total offense compared to Philadelphia’s 395.
With the win, Detroit moves to 10-0 for the first time in franchise history and strengthens its hold on the NFC’s top seed.
Next up, the Lions return to Ford Field to host the struggling New York Giants (3-8) as they continue their push toward the postseason.
DAN CAMPBELL LOCKER ROOM SPEECH
“HELL YEAH, MAN! THAT’S HOW YOU FIGHT! That’s how you come into somebody else’s house, take their best shot, and STILL walk out with the damn win. That’s grit. That’s resilience. That’s what we’re about, men!
We knew Philly was gonna punch us in the mouth. They’re a tough team. But we didn’t blink. We didn’t back down. We stood tall and kept swingin’. That’s a team win right there. Offense, defense, special teams—you all had a hand in this.
Jared—settled in after a couple bumps, dropped dimes all night. Gibbs—pounded it when we needed yards. LaPorta—tough catches. Defense—you hunted, man. You never let ‘em get comfortable. And we finish it out the right way. That’s Lions football.
Now listen—when you win a fight like that, you hand out some damn game balls.”
[He pulls the first ball out of a bag.]
“First one… Jameson Williams! FIVE grabs, 135 yards, TWO BIG touchdowns! You opened it up, you stretched ‘em, you gave us the spark, man!”
[Locker room erupts, players pound Jamo on the pads.]
“Next one… Alex Anzalone! Twenty tackles, man. TWENTY. Captain of the defense, held us together, flying all over the field, never quit. That’s leadership, that’s heart!”
[Players cheer, chant “An-za-lone! An-za-lone!”]
“And last but not least… how ‘bout our rookie, huh? Tyleik Williams! TWO SACKS! In THIS environment, against THAT quarterback? Welcome to the damn NFL, son!”
[Locker room goes crazy, rookies dump water bottles on Tyleik’s head.]
“Men, listen to me—we are 10-0 because we earn every single one of these wins. Nobody’s giving us anything. And next week? We go right back into another fight. It doesn’t get easier. But we’re the ones dictating the terms now.
So enjoy this one, damn it—you EARNED it. And then we get ready to do it all over again. 3-2-1—GRIT!”
