New player; Run game - power backs problem

Hey guys. Pretty new to the game. Having a ton of problems with the run game, it frankly seems awful compared to just throwing the ball. Not just for me either; I never feel like im afraid of my opponents run game. Often games have been won or lost by who runs the most; with the guy running a lot... losing. I play on the one before all-madden, all-pro? and sliders are pro the run-blocking and ive even taken down tackling a bit to try and help.

I especially have noticed problems with traditional backs, like power backs. Some stuff that just boogles my mind. I often see that if they have edge rushers out on the flanks of my O-line, my guys wont even try to block them when running the ball. So I can have a 5 - 4 advantage in the middle, but since their edge rushers are unblocked they just run and tackle my HB from behind!?!!?! it's infuriating. Ive look for pre-snap options to have them spread out or something but I havent found anything. How do you use power backs!? All I want is to be able to punish someone who leaves the middle too open. Why cant I tell my damn tackles to block the damn edge rushers...

this is kinda my "commute game", on a gaming laptop, so it might not have been patched in ages, could that be a problem?
