Given any thought yet to the 49ers front seven? I expect a lot of shakeup there.
The only thing really set in stone is NaVorro Bowman at MATT (MLB1). As often as he's hurt, MLB2 might as well be a starting position, which Ourlads has Brock Coyle listed. Both of those players should stay at MLB.
The rest of the lineup is all over the place.
Ahmad Brooks is a better-than-average SAM (LOLB), very good at setting the edge. So I'm not sure why the 49ers have him working with the defensive line in mini camps. Maybe they're looking at isolating what each player does best? Brooks would probably be a better LE than SAM, but he's a better SAM than anyone else on the roster and plenty of people are better LEs. Considering the congestion at the LE position, and how think the LB corps is, I expect he'll get back to SAM before long. I'd make Ahmad Brooks a LOLB>
Reuben Foster, if healthy, will likely start at WILL (ROLB), but there's a possibility he could move inside to MATT (MLB) and push NaVorro Bowman. I don't have any evidence for this except it's what I'd do to save Bowman the wear and tear of being in the middle. I'd make Foster a ROLB.
Aaron Lynch is another former linebacker probably moving to defensive line. I said before, it seems they're isolating skills. Aaron Lynch is an above average pass rusher and pretty terribly at all other things linebacking. Playing at LEO (RE) in this scheme would benefit him greatly. However, he's shown up overweight two years running so he could be in the dog house. I think it's safe to edit his position to RE though.
D.J. Jones, Quinton Dial, and Earl Mitchell will battle for the NT position, safe to put them both at DT. Ourlads has Mitchell starting. I think Dial's better, and I think he'll win the spot in camp. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong. List all 3 at DT.
Now the tough ones...
DeForest Buckner and Solomon Thomas are strange. Ideally, they'd both start at LE and move to 3-Tech (DT1) on passing downs:/ They fill the same roles. It's very possible the 49ers go the Tampa-2 route and let one of those guys just stay at DT and disrupt on every down, but that would be a bit of a departure from the defense's more conservative approach (the Tampa 2 used a 4-3 under front primarily, just as the Seattle Press-3 does. The Tampa 2, however, treated the running game as an after thought, Press-3 does not.)
So either DeForest Buckner or Solomon Thomas is going to become either Warren Sapp or Michael Bennett, and there's no clear signs which and which. Ourlads has Buckner at LE and Thomas at Undertackle, so for now, best bet is Thomas DT, Buckner LE.
The two biggest wildcards are Ronald Blair and Arik Armstead. There is talk of Armstead being the starting RE, and Blair rotating behind both Buckner and Thomas. I don't personally agree with it, but that seems to be the route there taking. Here you put Armstead at RE, Blair and LE.
Summed up/Loose ends:
LE- DeForest Buckner, Ronald Blair, Tank Carradine, Noble Nwachukwo
DT- Soloman Thomas, Quinton Dial, Earl Mitchell, D.J. Jones
RE- Arik Armstead, Aaron Lynch, Chris Jones
LOLB- Ahmad Brooks, Eli Harold, Ray Ray Armstrong, Jimmie Gilbert
MLB- NaVorro Bowman, Brock Coyle, Donavin Newsom
ROLB- Reuben Foster, Malcolm Smith, Dekoda Watson, Pita Taumoepenu
And that'll probably ALL be wrong
