Defensively Madden just hasn't kept up to modern offenses. Offenses have all these tools to work with and defenses just don't and not to mention how convoluted the defensive audible system is. Also remember they took out a lot of the walking up to the line that offenses have and defense feels like a passive experience sometimes. I think a great counter is to greatly restrict the offenses ability to draw up new plays at the LOS.

Great write-up. Really shows how archaic certain portions of Maddens base code is.

Excellent article and my current number one issue with the game. The lack of evolution from the play calling, specifically the defense pass coverage needs to be addressed for sim heads. Highly doubt it ever reaches the level this article hopes bc I know for sure that the push back is simpler is better for the online/mut crowd.

Am I just having revisionist history about thinking NCAA was much better/quicker at updating their playbooks? I remember the zone read being in NCAA 05 (**** didn't work correctly but it was there).

Just having the ability to have preset audibles based on offensive looks. Having to manually go in and change each players assignment or coverage alignment every time gets tedious. If I know what the offense is doing it should be a single button press to adapt to it.

Or maybe have a tiered system of playcalling. Macro/micro play calling on defense. Macro is the system we have now where micro let's you choose each level of the defenses play. But this game just doesn't have the infrastructure in place to allow this as a million different things would be broken. The Oline needs a huge rework as well. Basically it all starts in the trenches before coverage needs to be reworked. It's all just a jumbled up mess at this point.

Didn't they do that though and comp people (and others beyond comp) freaked out about not being able to change routes up at the line in quick succession? I think unless playcalling gets deeper, it's tricky to want to not allow people to change the play at the line because you already don't have enough tools before you go it right now.

Now, if they got to the level where audibles/kills/etc. were interesting and could be saved and at the ready, then for sure I'd be with it.

This is the direction I would like to see Madden move in with respect to playcalling, personally.
