Explanation/tips on running base 4-3/3-4 and attacking 4-3/3-4

What exactly do they mean by base 4-3 or 3-4? I'm assuming they mean more coverage oriented? Any tips on how to effectively run an effective base and attacking 4-3 or 3-4? Thanks!

My guess would be that base 3-4 is a two gap DL scheme, while attacking 3-4 is a one gap DL scheme, since in a one gap scheme the defensive linemen "attack" a specific point and try to get penetration.

Of course, that couldn't possibly be right because the game has the 49ers as a base 3-4 even though they actually run a 3-4 under one gap scheme. So maybe I'm completely wrong. Maybe "attacking" means more blitzes, while "base" means a more conservative defense?

At this point, all of that stuff is mostly cosmetic with regards to the user. There really are no true schemes in Madden at this point. The game just isn't that comprehensive yet. The "schemes" they have now are mostly there for building your roster. You bring in a guy whose best scheme-fit is an attacking 4-3 then he'll progress faster vs. a guy who fits best in a base 3-4; he'll progress a lot slower and will probably lose an OVR rating point or two.

Where it does have some game functionality is when you are playing against the CPU, it will be somewhat reflected in the playcalling. You'll get more blitzes and an overall more aggressive style of play from a team with an attacking scheme vs. a base team which will play more coverage. You're correct about that. So, if you want to replicate that while playing you can (Seattle = ton of single high/Atlanta = ton of 3rd down blitzes with secondary players), but there really is no penalty or reward for doing so in game.
