There may be better ways to teach tackling in a video game, but adding a visual aid to help teach users timing of the new tackling command set can't hurt, IMO.
Oh I agree, but I don't think "switch and dive" is a problem with understanding football; it is a problem understanding physics and spatial recognition.

On the subject of teaching football fundamentals I both ridicule EA and congratulate them. The tackle cone does not teach football, nor does their new playcalling system (at least as they describe it, calling plays by concept could but calling plays because it works for the community does not). But they have added several training drills that are said to teach the game and that deserves a plus. Last year for example they had pass trajectory drills that taught players when to lob and when to bullet. That is teaching football.

Back to the tackle cone, you are right when you say it can't hurt. I don't dislike the feature, I just enjoy taking shots at the casual guys whenever I can. Consider it retribution for all the times those jerks killed me in Call of Duty. My only gripe is nothing more than a suspicion that the mechanics are the same, that they have just been under the hood so to speak. With the cone all they did was bring it up as a user interface. Does that really qualify as a new feature?

Finally, EA seems to be finally taking the approach of teaching the game (even if their methodology is questionable) and I think that bodes well for the future of the series. If they are teaching fundamentals now, a reasonable expectation is that fundamentals will be more important in the future. Perhaps they are trying to turn some casual fans into sim players in order to make the transition to a simulation style game better.

I've got another friend that plays Madden but has very little football knowledge and I'll ask him what defense was he just in and he would have no idea.

But that's the thing with madden. You don't need to understand strategy. You can line up in quarters and still stop the run. You can choose the same play offense and defense all game and still win.

It is something isn't it? True football fans scream it is not nearly deep enough while casual videogame players often say it is too complicated.

But I think that happens with most sports games. I think a good comparison is NBA 2k and its playcalling system. Most casual guys probably don't call plays or rarely call one or two "money plays." Its the sim guys that will call plays. And it works for basketball because running set plays is kind of optional. Madden does not have that luxury.

As far as understanding football strategy, I am fine with not knowing the sport and still being able to beat the AI on lower difficulties but player vs player and all madden difficulty should be a different story. The problem is that on all madden the AI does not play smarter, it only gets a ratings boost.

Madden needs to drastically improve the strategic element to the game.

This is why we can't have nice things. Learning curves are bad. Having to actually learn to do something is bad. Everything needs to be accessible, which, in my experience translates to lack depth. I'd like to see more chess, but chess has a learning curve, it requires strategy and knowledge of the situation. Most people don't even want checkers, they want Candy Land.

Tackling is finally fixed? I don't know what video he was watching, because what I seen it looks ridiculous. Hopefully it will be better when the game drops. Even it that mean patches.

Madden always adds a gimmick......something new to appeal to the masses to get you to spend your $60. Like someone said earlier..........something like this should have been put on the back burner until other main issues were addressed. I will definitely be turning off the cone....

yup....and for the majority.....that's fine with them

That's why the sim crowd has it stacked against them

In Madden its more beneficial to go for it on fourth down, because the defense can't stop anything. I want to play Madden where the person with the best strategy is in the better position to win. On 3rd and 12, cheesers shouldnt be able to throw to the tight end everytime.
