Interesting little nugget on Madden

http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/l...-break-madden/

Found this podcast in which a couple of guys went down to EA Tiburon to e put in the game and we're rated on their in game skills. Its mostly just them discussing the process of getting scanned and rated but one tidbit that was interesting was that Donny Moore aka the rating czar basically has to rate the players a certain way to get the game to work right and why they don't use the whole rating scale. It's not his rating so much as the engine they use to determine the outcomes of those ratings.

One example they made was Tom Brady and his throw on the run. He's rated pretty high on throw on the run. In real life he doesn't do it all that often and he's definitely not on the same level as say Aaron Rodgers. But the way Madden is built they have to Jack up that rating just to make him usable outside the pocket. It's interesting and worth a listen.

I remember for years and years they had to jack the Acceleration stat on offensive guards through the roof, otherwise they wouldn't do the pulling guard animations properly.

I remember this. It really adversely affected playing defense along the front 7. I remember being able to shoot gaps as a linebacker or hit a fullback deep on run plays if I read properly. I don't remember exactly when it happened, but all of a sudden the guards were up on me vitrually at the snap.

If a players ratings have to be a certain way for the game to work right then there is something really, really, really and so on, wrong.
