On the twitter account they explain it that the timer only runs when the game is going. If you exit out of it, it stops

No. That's an option left up to the publisher starting next month. MS has confirmed they'll do it with Forza Horizon 2 and EA will do it with FIFA 15. Hopefully other publishers follow suit. I don't see why they wouldn't

Yep. It runs as soon as you enter the game. Also, don't forget to CLOSE the app out once ur done, otherwise the timer will keep running.
