How to pass over a defender

Is there a special trick involved? It seems like the only way to complete a pass in this game is there's complete line of sight from the QB to the receiver. But I know in real life, you can drop passes over defenders. What am I missing? I basically can't complete corner routes ever, because no matter how open the receiver appears to me, the defender is able to recover (laterally) and knockdown/intercept the pass.

It just seems like even when defenders are beaten, they still defend passes and that makes no sense to me.

Re: How to pass over a defender

The drills really help with this. (especially your comment on corner routes)
A few are timing etc.. where you have to time it right and get a good lob pass over them.

You'll think "No way I can get that completed and get gold on this drill!!"
But once you get it down it's cool.

Basically on corners you really have to lead them to corner and not wait to long. If you wait too long the defender with get there..

I actually threw a pass with Tom Brady to Julian Edelman in double coverage, I took control of Edelman as the ball was coming in high, and leaped in the air and made a pretty spectacular catch over the CB.

Right after I posted this, I googled this issue and realized I asked this exact question like 7 months ago on OS.....like, it's my personal legacy bug. I've always had this issue, from NCAA 2007, and I still have it

I hate practicing video games but I guess I gotta put in the work...

It's EA, kinda hard for them to make it that realistic. I mean either you can pass all over the CPU and it's not fun or the CPU wins every time. Soo yeah you just need to time it right really

Re: How to pass over a defender

I will echo Sky and encourage you to try out the skills trainer. I've played Madden every year but I wouldn't consider myself an expert by any means. I jumped in skills trainer and I feel like I have a whole new outlook on how to play the game. I'm reading defenses, understanding how pass routes affect each other and using timing in my passes all incredibly more than ever.

Re: How to pass over a defender

Corner routes etc.. are timing routes unless the player is totally not seen and no one is aware of the player then yeah .. easy completions.
To me it's perfectly fine how it is in Madden.
You can't wait until the player has turned to the corner and then decide to pass.
try it in the drills and it will help a lot man.
