A big problem is they don't seem to rate player upside. A 73 rated rookie should be more valuable that a 77 rated 5 year vet

Not necessarily, you would have to go by development trait. A normal trait rookie is not better than a quick or superstar 5 year player.

Madden needs a dynamic potential rating, like FIFA.

Would you rather have a 74 who's in his 5th year with a potential rating of 77 or a 73 who's in his 2nd year with a potential rating of 85? If there's no potential the future doesn't get brought into account. There's no measurement for keeping a player for how good he will/should/might be.

A player with quick or superstar progressions shouldn't be a 76/77 5 years in. That would be a very rare sight.

I ended up going in and signing Dalton to a contract similar to his new one to prevent this from happening (as well as a few other players who signed deals recently).
