Help! I can't run the ball or break up a pass.

Hey everyone. I'm a longtime Madden player and fan, though I admit that I have always been more of an NCAA guy. With the absence of an NCAA game this year, I returned to Madden. I am playing on the PS 4 on All-Pro with no slider adjustments. However, the problem I am having is twofold. One, I can't run to save my life! And please don't just say I suck, because, as I already mentioned, I have been playing both Madden and NCAA for some time and have a decent football IQ. I've tried to run stretch plays, dives, ISO, toss, but none of them have resulted in more than a six yard gain at MAX. Most of the time, I'm getting a yard or rushing for -1 yard. Further, I've tried running out of the shotgun, pistol, power I, traditional I-Form, etc, but have had no success. Needless to say, it is very frustrating.

My second problem is I am absolutely powerless to stop the CPU pass! It seems like no matter what I do I can't force an incompletion. Robo QB is in full effect, and it doesn't seem to matter if it is Peyton Manning or Charlie Whitehurst in the pocket, the QB is going to complete 100 % or, at best, 85 % of his passes! I've been putting pressure, trying to use "ball hawk" (I thought when the ball was at the highest point you just hold triangle, correct?) but nothing works. What's worse is my guys don't even make a play on the ball. I've tried using R1 which is supposed to be swat, but I haven't seen so much as an attempt at a swat.

If anyone could help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks, OS'ers!

The slider forum can help you with the run game, there are a bunch of things you can do with that over there.
The pass game..good luck. Robo qb can be stopped but it will just cause more problems with another aspect of the game. You can spend a bunch of time editing all the qb's and I hear that works well, again, look in the slider forum.

So if I lower the CPU QB Accuracy slider, will that cause the CPU to not be a robo QB and throw some incompletions here and there? As far as the run is concerned, I'd rather not mess with sliders too much to be able to run the football.

I applied some of the things I learned from the other thread on running the ball, but, as the Colts, I am not able to run with their starting HB much (can't remember his name). I do, however, have some success with Trent Richardson.

I'd like to play some games today, but I want to get the run game down before doing so. I'd appreciate anyone who reads this thread taking the time to give me some advice. Thanks.

What other thread are you referring to?
I don't want to repeat what you have already heard.

Edit: Regarding stopping the pass, lowering accuracy is a good move but there are other things as well. I cannot fully explain it but it is almost like the AI QBs get in a rhythm like in real life. It is not uncommon for the AI to start 8-8 for ~55 yards against me. I have learned to not panic or drastically change my gameplan. Just try to get pressure and force them into a 3rd and long. In my experience sometimes all it takes is one splash play to throw the AI QB off.

to get the running game going u have to follow your blockers and watch for holes opening up... and don't hit the sprint as soon u get the ball also u need to set both up the run or pass to get either to work this yr.

I think my longest run this yr has been around 65 yards but I useally do avg 100 yards rushing almost every game... and with way I have my auto subs set up I get all my backs into the game.

my running game useally starts out slow getting 2, 3 yards here or there then i'll get bigger chunks as the game goes on.

u may wanna check out your oline men stats for run blocking...if they are low u may struggle running the ball with bradshaw or Richardson.

Do the Colts have Pistol Y-trips in their playbook?

If so look for my favorite running play -- power.
Generally I don't like running power run as much as other plays, but from that formation it is nasty.

Re: Help! I can't run the ball or break up a pass.

I love the running game so much in this year's game. Through 10 games I currently lead the league with 999 yards, 5.6 ypa, 14 tds, and an 80 yard long...with LeGarrette Blount. Here's what I found that works on runs up the middle, don't hold the modifier (L2) going through the line it takes away from your momentum. Instead, as soon as you get to your hole, hit that sprint button. If you see contact coming, hit the truck stick or stiff arm if they are coming from the side, while still holding sprint. If your guys don't have great carry (80+) than substitute the cover button for the sprint button right before contact. This method really only works with power backs, as I also have Lamar Miller and he is only averaging 3.7 per.

On the defensive side, I'm personally not a fan of lowering the cpu accuracy, so what we did in our league was lower Cpu WR catch to 35. We've seen the AI QBs completion rates range anywhere from 40% to 80%.

Re: Help! I can't run the ball or break up a pass.

There have been some good things mentioned here. First, look into lowering pass def reaction and increasing pass coverage like mentioned above. I use 10-80, respectively, and it works well for me. I still have some issues with the QB passing too accurately, ~75%, but I combatant this with increasing their interception possibility. I'm lucky to get 1 pick a game but still, that helps off set. Second, the run is awesome this year, if done how it's intended. I had tons of trouble at first until I read a thread on here that said to use the modifier as soon as you get the ball. So I tried it and what do you know, it worked great. Now I hardly use the modifier, stick only, I don't touch sprint until I have an opening either breaking through the middle or rounding the corner. trust me, use this method and you'll do fine. I run the ball a lot, a whole lot. I just finished my second season of CFM with Ellington as my #1 back. He had nearly ~2300 yards, broke the single season record, over ~400 carries, 18 tds and ~5 ypa. Also had Knile Davis as my #2 and he had over 700 yards averaging ~7 ypa. I play on All-pro using mainly Armour's sliders with a few adjustments based on various sliders

Try turning off ball hawk and the other cpu assist options in the game options, felt like the game played much differently with all of them turned off. My defense started getting 2-3 picks a game vs cpu on all pro.

Re: Help! I can't run the ball or break up a pass.

I've found that if you want a challenge you cannot change the QB accuracy, because they will hold the ball and take dumb sacks. Instead, I try to limit all passes to short ones, and try to make quick tackles, hoping for a 3 and out. I normally control the player covering the flats, and move him to crossing routes, but then jump into the flats right before he passes, to make the tackle for about a 2 yard play.

Right now I'm 3-0 in close games with the Jags, going against Philly, Washington, and the Colts. I put the sliders on 85 coverage, and dropped my reaction to about 30 or 25. QBs still missing only about 4-5 passes a game, but normally they're at the end when they are in a 2 minute drill, or I sniff out a screen.

As for running, I've found this different for each team. You have to look at your OL and your RB.

When I was the Eagles, I could run just about any play, and I would hit about 5 yards before I even got touched. I could hit sprint as soon as I touched the ball, let go to juke, and speed burst again. It worked very will, huge lanes in front of me, and never got tackles behind LOS.

Now as the Jags, with a TERRIBLE OL, and a slow power RB, I've found to not touched the Burst Button unless you are in open field (which I haven't been in, in three games). I even scoured the trading block to see if I could improve my running game. So I trade for 3 OL (all under 72 OVR) and Robert Turbin, a power back, that had some quickness in his feet.

For a weak OL, and not so talented RB, I wouldn't run outside, ever. Run quick up the guy plays, hold onto the ball, and try to take the clock down. Understand who is blocking who, if your best OL is on the left, run mostly to the left. Let your blockers setup, don't run right into their backs. Don't hit sprint with these conditions, you'll just run into your own blockers, and be stopped easily, losing your head of steam.

I added Mike Adams, Ben Jones, Khaled Holmes, and Robert Turbin to boost my rushing attack. And in one game, Turbin had 45 Rushes, for 180 yards.

Gerhart had 58 rushes in two games, for 188 yards.
