Need defensive help or tips

Hello I'm looking for help or pointers to help me on defense. I used to play Madden and be really good at it, but this is my first Madden since probably 12 or 13. I'm constantly getting burned by scrub qb who complete 70-80% of their passes and throw for around 500 yards agame. Im currently playing on pro difficulty and have all sliders set at 50 against the computer.

Another issue I'm having is not having enough time to choose a defensive play and don't always come out in a scheme I want to choose. 15 seconds is not enough time to look at what my opponent is running and trying to find the right defensive play call. Is there anyway to turn the counter off so I have the time to pick a play? Or maybe it might get a patch? Any advice and tips would be helpful.
