Are there steals in the draft?

I know there are broken things in CFM, including generated rookies' attributes when compared to the real player pool. But I am curious as to whether anyone is finding varied value throughout the draft?

Last year, you could find both busts and gems throughout the draft. So far this year I can only find busts. I've yet to see someone with "1st Round Talent" that is projected outside of Rounds 1 or 2. It seems very rare to find anyone beyond Round 2 that has talent outside his projected round. Yet busts are littered throughout all rounds.

Am I just unlucky? Or is finding draft steals considerably broken compared to last year? I'm not talking about raw physical players in the late rounds that you can slowly develop... I'm talking about solid players outside the early rounds.

I blindly picked a QB in the fifth round that was an 81 overall.

Did you scout him beforehand? What round talent did it show him as?

It had him as rated as an undrafted player, but I noticed that he had this highest combine grade with a 7.2 out of all the remaining prospects.

I wish I could tell you that it took talent, but I totally lucked out.

I feel like scouting is kind of broken. It will let you know when you find a bust, but not really gems. An 82OVR stud that should go in the 1st, but is projected for the 5th, scouting will say has 5th Round Talent. I've yet to see scouting tell you a stud has earlier talent than the round he is projected. It only works that way with busts.

I went through one CFM season doing the just the scouting and this jives with what I experienced. I didn't pay attention much to how things turned out but I did notice that there were very few guys with a true talent above their projection and overall very few guys with a different true talent than their projection. Maybe it's something they tried to do to prevent being able to pluck gems like that but if it is that's kind of stupid.

im finding that the scouting grade is the most important thing

everytime i've taken a player who was projected low round but had one of the top scouting grades, he's been a stud

most notably an 81 OVR QB projected 4th round whos got near identical throwing as russel wilson but better deep ball and 91 speed

Had the same thing for a corner back. He had 3 B ratings and some top combine, but had undrafted talent in the 4th or 5th. He's 76 ovr, very good stats, just a plain ol dummy though lol.

With the way scouting is though, I kind of like it like that. Read somewhere that you can pretty much scout 80-85% of the draft or something like that. If that is the case then you would be able to figure out almost every single gem if it gave you the true round to draft them in based on ovr.

In the NFL you typically see more guys fall off a draft boards than you see climb up them significantly. Teams aren't alerted to the next Tom Brady or Arian Foster. Those were guys who graded out as late rounders, were drafted there, and ended up being some of the best at their positions. Teams aren't able to identify late round picks as surefire stars. If they were they would draft them earlier in the draft to ensure they get them.

Though I think the way scouting works should be revamped, the way the system is now allows for you to be able to identify busts more easily, but makes finding gems much harder because there is still variance in their skills even if they grade out well. I think the way to approach it is to draft guys that end up living up to their draft projection (or if they exceed it, which I've only seen someone go up by a round so far) and expect that whatever round you draft them in you should be expecting to get a "talent" for that round. (in other words, draft a guy in the 5th, you should expect his ovr is going to be high 60s or low 70s or so). Then if he turns out to be better you're pleasantly surprised

After all that rambling, pretty much my conclusion is that this is a much better system than being able to identify surefire stars in the late rounds like you could in the past

The problem is, that you know beforehand that he is going to grade out better than his round.
We need a system where you won't know the true value of player until he has been with your team for a certain period of time, a system where progression is not in the hands of a god like user. A system where having good or bad scouts truely matters

I can agree with that, though I think that too many people would dislike it for it to ever actually happen.

A few years back they did have the system where rookies overalls wouldn't be revealed until in the preseason. Definitely wasn't perfect, but it was something.

The more I think about it though, the more I think that the xp system is here to stay. Majority of users would rather have full control over how their players progress, etc. rather than be left in the dark and have no control....but...
