What's the difference between Swat and Play ball/Ball Hawk this year???

It seems like every time I attempt to swat the ball by pressing R1 (PS4), "play ball" is displayed and my defender does the same animation he would if I had pressed Triangle for Ball Hawk instead of R1! Do the swat and ball hawk mechanics work as one now? Because I remember it always being 2 separate moves! I've tried holding R1, I've tried tapping it, and it still continues to perform the same animations. Is this a bug or is it a situational thing where it only performs the swat animation when appropriate?

I believe square swats the ball not R1.

Both buttons swap the ball and need to be held. I haven't noticed the animations doing anything different, but I also play no switch style, so a lot of times I'm not playing the ball.
