Has anybody researched offensive and defensive linemen?

I used to think acceleration was important - the player who can get out of his stance first has an advantage.

However when I look at the list of last year's all pro linemen they don't have particularly good acceleration.

OL all pros have good run block, pass block and strength.

For DL all pros seem to have good block shedding and pursuit.

It seems all this time I was wrong about acceleration being a major factor.

I'm wondering if anybody has done a detailed study of this.

Thanks.

For O line: I think acceleration is more important on pulls. IF they can move quick enough. Or on screens to see if they can get to the point of attack quick.

For D line: It determines how fast they will get after the QB after defeating the lineman or chasing down a toss play. That initial 5 yard burst.

I just looked the ratings list from EA and there's actually quite a O line above 80 acc and D line above 85 acceleration. More than I thought.

It's an important factor if you run a 4-3 or like to pull lineman.

Not a study. Just opinion lol

Only time I concern myself with O-line speed/acc is for sweeps(tosses) when the guard pulls and blocks for the HB going around the end. If he isn't quick enough the HB will leave him behind and lose a blocker.

I'll add to that trap plays, LBs or DBs closing the gap once the ball is in the air or just received by a stationary target. Also very important for blitzing LBs and DBs, in either run or pass blitz. Again, no study just observation and opinion.

Re: Has anybody researched offensive and defensive

I drafted a defensive tackle in last year's version of the game who had the highest strength rating in the draft but low acc. He got pancaked half or more of the time and I believe his low acc didn't allow him to get out of his stance fast enough.

Perhaps there is a threshold below which acc becomes detrimental.
