This better be overhauled in Madden 17 or I will not buy the game until pass blocking and line play in general is overhauled. Why can't offensive linemen turn their hips, this is unacceptable for a sports game in 2015!!

Improved line play was big selling points for both Madden 25 and Madden 15. Linemen were supposed to make 60x calculations per second. A pocket was supposed to form more consistently. They sold it as "war in the trenches" and "war in the trenches 2.0". There's definitely no war in the trenches more like a game of patty cake. Ball snaps they immediately engage then either the d linemen gets a win and gets off the block or they just stand there and patty cake. There's no struggle on the line. Disappointing.

Its crazy how people just ignore stuff like this in Madden, if crap like this was in The Show or NBA 2K people would go crazy, but since its Madden and its been bad for so long, when they put out a decent game people ignore the issues. At some point or another I was going to make a video on the importance of offensive and defensive line interactions concerning Madden; however, I'll go ahead and put some of my thoughts here.

The line interaction in Madden is probably the single biggest shortcoming in the game. The game of football is very complicated in respect to the simplicity of advancing a ball to an opponet's endzone, but even at the highest level of play, it really comes down to two things: blocking and tackling. Blocking appears to be an afterthought in the game developer's priorities though, and I think that this is due to it being an afterthought to most football fans. As long as five fat guys appear to stand in front of the defense's four to five guys, it is all gravy to most players.That is all Madden tries to accomplish; just get five guys in front of the quarterback. I can't particularly blame them either. Why carefully design an authentic system of blocking that the vast majority of the market wouldn't even appreciate?

This narrative doesn't hold water and it isn't true.

Between NCAA Football and Madden NFL (which adopted NCAA Football's tech as it was developed), the run blocking, pass blocking, and blocking targeting AI has been basically completely rebuilt. The new pass blocking AI in particular was a huge focal point of the Gen-4 build-up for Madden NFL 25. Heck, one of the most visible guys on Twitter for the series, core gameplay designer Clint Oldenberg, is a former NFL offensive lineman and since his arrival to the series getting the offensive line developer attention has been one of his primary focuses.

That's not to say blocking in Madden NFL 16 is perfect. I don't know enough of the nuances of blocking to know what's wrong; I'm sure the hardcore X's and O's football nuts of this forum could still pick apart some of the finer points of the current implementation, and the lack of true gap play and run fills by the defense is a glaring omission in the game's AI at this point.

However, I challenge you to go put in Madden NFL 12, compare the blocking across the board in that game to this current one, and tell me there's not a leap-and-bound difference between how the offensive line plays then and now.

No other sports game get as many passes as Madden, I guess that's the privilege you have when you have the exclusive NFL license. And I made an account just to bash Madden? huh, I think this is my first ever thread.

Anyway, the issue is that the offensive linemen only have one stance! They cannot come out of their basic stance for some reason, they need to be able to turn their hips and cross their feet in order to keep up with defensive linemen. They are still using the same technology from 16 years ago on the line, when are they going to scrap it and give us true next gen line play instead of hyping up of bandaids they've come up with. That other football games from a decade ago has more realistic line play than Madden, if they can do it why cant Tiburon with all the money they have.

I truly believe you have a right to have an opinion and I have no issue with you starting a thread to voice that opinion.

But............your flat out wrong about Madden getting a pass for its faults. I've been a member here for a long time and I can say without a doubt that with the exception of NBA live no game gets bashed or called out more than Madden. Its honestly almost unbearable in the Madden forums compared to the other games.

And without getting into it I had a feeling you would bring up "the other game". Thats how most of these threads go. But man its tired. Time to let that horse out to pasture. Again though I do respect you having an opinion.

Let me explain my position a little more if you don't mind. It is my understanding that you are game designer by profession, yes? Well, my profession happens to be in teaching and coaching. I've occupied paid and unpaid coaching positions at Class 5A and 6A in the state of Alabama. I understand the game better than the average observer, so things that might not stick out to some, are an eyesore for me. The kids that I coach love Madden and NCAA, but I constantly have to reinforce to them that Madden doesnt translate to actual football play - especially when I was coaching defensive backs.

When I said blocking is not a priority for this development team, I really meant that blocking fundamentals are not a priority. I realize they have put alot of work in improving their blocking A.I., and I am aware of Clint's involvement in development. Your right. The game is improved, but it's still not an accurate depiction of football in this regard. Madden, in its current state, represents what the average observer of football thinks blocking is - five relatively big guys standing in the way of defenders.

It is a video game. Not a vr simulator. Make the difficulty harder and don't watch replays.. That will save your eyes from the bad hip movement, poor technique, awful footwork and hand usage.

I can't determine if this is sarcasm or not? I'm going to assume you're being completely serious for the sake of discussion though.

I disagree with the argument that it's just a video game so it shouldn't be compared to reality. Its a football game that wants to be a good representation of football - Rex Dickson claims this is the goal anyway. Some things, yeah...but we're discussing the most important part of the game. I'm not trying to lobby developers to implement something minute or inconsequential.

Run blocking needs to start with implementing the basic blocks in football: Drive, Reach, Cut-off, Down, Pull, and Read. It also needs to have proper hat placement, shoulder positioning, feet width, and most importantly coiled hip positioning when approaching contact.

Pass blocking needs the most work. The inside linemen need to set the vertical depth of the pocket, so that the quarterback can step up into the pocket to throw. Tackles need to be forcing any edge rushers up field and outside or make them rush through them in order to make the play.

On that note, all defenders need to be attacking their responsibilities. In the game, they just stand straight up out of their stance timidly and look to become engaged with a blocker so the play can play out. That is unless an aggressive blockshed animation occurs.

The OP might be nit picking, but if anyone can watch that video and say it's how you'd expect a game in 2015 to work I'd be shocked. Why can everyone else in the game move fluid, but the OL men can't turn around sideways to block for the QB? I don't expect perfection, it IS a video game, but if an offensive lineman isn't engaged in a block, if he's clearly trying to chase down and block guys that are going to sack the QB, shouldn't they well.. Turn? It's not game breaking, and I think for the most part the work in the trenches is fine, but this kind of shocked me. That said I never watch replays so I might miss a lot of stuff like that.

Unfortunately, some people buy the game just to disect it to see what they could find wrong even though there are so many things that are right .

The game is fun but that's not the agenda. Its A shame because M16 is very good and majority of the community agrees.
