Madden 16 Running game

So I've never had a real problem running the ball in previous Maddens but this year seems to be weird. Here's a quote from another user from another forum and I agree with their statement.


"I haven't played madden in the last 2 years, but, while running the ball, one of the most crucial moves were sharp cuts/jukes to hit a hole that pops open in the line. Just playing around w/ this game for a sec, when you use the R Stick to cut left/right, can anyone do a sharp juke/cut? They all seem pretty subtle and don't cover much ground...or I may be doing it wrong w/ DeMarco.."


So as you can see I'm not the only one struggling with this. It feels like I have no control over the runner at times. Especially when a defender gets close and I need to make a sharp juke.


Really just feels like running is nurfed this year. And I notice most people pass over run as well no longer do I see players running more than passing. I can understand why, it's not very effective.


Anyway any advice on how to master the running game would be great.

I'm not great with the sticks but the juke is somewhat subtle but can get it to work sometimes but you can't speed burst through the line too quick,RT on Xbox and if you're using a back like Jamaal Charles you might get a few extra yards by getting small when getting an opening through the line,RB on Xbox.A bigger back can use the truck stick and timed with LT and up on the right stick can be effective.

I don't know if you're talking more offline or on but speed parity setting would make a difference with a faster back like Charles.0 would optimize this when using tosses getting around the edge.I'm using sliders that are slightly tweaked from Armor and Swords and have my run blocking at 50-52,can't remember but I know the 50-55 range for both you and the CPU seems to make a big difference with just a couple points either way.The Chiefs o-line I found to be a little subpar though.You can't expect to average 6 yards per carry every game.You should concentrate on boosting the o-line and running back confidence before the game.

The best and simplest advice I can give is.... LET GO OF SPRINT. You have to be patient and not press sprint until you hit the hole.

Actually, pretty much all of the top ranked madden players have said that they hold the right trigger straight out of the hole. Just play the numbers game and aim your running back to a hole.

i had been away from Madden for a decade. how the heck do I juke ?
it should not be that hard. any advice ?

I recently became pretty good at the run game. It has always been my playstyle in previous Maddens and I've always had to lower it to zero. This year I have to work my way down to zero and am currently at 40. Just be patient and practice how to move your back. Get a feel for how sensitive you have to be on the sticks.

I'm just getting used to it now and I'm still not doing that well, but I've noticed that all my long runs come from going up the middle and not going to the outside like previous Maddens. I usually forget all about the get skinny button tho aswell.

Actually, pretty much all of the top ranked madden players have said that they hold the right trigger straight out of the hole. Just play the numbers game and aim your running back to a hole.

Most of the Top Ranked Madden players are also using the same two runs (Inside zone out of the shotgun offset sets and HB Toss out of Strong Close), two runs in which turbo is more helpful (especially the inside zone when people immediately cut it back and turn it in to a manual counter run).


When you are running in general

- Don't sprint UNTIL you have one man to beat in whichever direction you are running (outside runs you will be looking to beat them laterally).


- Stretch runs can be successful against the CPU if you cut them back. Do this by double juking (R Stick to the outside of the run then quickly to the inside so that you get a direction changing juke instead of the side stepping animation, while doing this quickly push the L stick towards the hole in the line you are cutting back to).

- There is another cut back you can use by holding LT/L2 and pushing both the R and L stick to the left or right (this is the HUGE jump cut that will cut off your momentum for a moment, so make sure you have some room behind the line. You will need to practice the timing).

- There is a sneaky good stutter step that some people don't know about - If you tap L2/LT you will see your player raise his knee. It will cause him to slow down for a split second - you can also pivot to a different direction while doing this. Causes the CPU fits when trying to pursue you from the side (good for outside the Tackle running).

- Last tip - Run to the strengths of your line. Strength, Run Block and Impact Block are the ratings that directly affect your lineman's blocking. Check these stats (and acceleration for your interior linemen if you run a lot of toss/trap/power runs) and follow your best blockers. Maybe even sub in a TE with better blocking stats. My BIGGEST issue when learning to run was I liked running to the left when LT's in the game tend to be better pass blockers. Research your team.

Hopefully some of this helps you. Going off the top of my head, so I'm sorry if it seems a little convoluted.

Biggest thing I learned the last couple of years that always had me in the top of my leagues in rushing is to follow blockers and not out run them. This comes from not only laying off the sprint button but also positioning your lead blocker in between you and the defender at a good angle.

For instance if you are taking a handoff outside with a lead blocker in front of you and a defender is pursuing from the outside. You want to keep your defender on your outside shoulder so he has an angle to make a block. This is also critical in years past due to how wonky downfield blocking could be. Working the angles helps "push" the blocker AI to do what you want.

There are times where I slow down so much I'm nearly at a standstill waiting to get my blockers in position and turn on the jets once they are for a huge gain.

I use double juke to cut into holes. It takes good vision from both you and the player you are controlling, but you can break some very big runs with a well timed double juke.

Some people suggest using the precision modifier until you clear the LOS, but in my experience you lose too much speed. I do occasionally feather it (quick tap and release just to change direction) but typically juking is all I need.

I don't use speed burst until after I reach the second level.

I much rather have it this way than the old way, it just makes running the rock far far more rewarding. The only thing i am going to suggest in my yearly suggestions post is to offer more stick movement to break more tackles, that, or the option for those of us that miss the rapid pressing of a button to break tackles and rapid press of the button for faster run speed, ala NFL 2k5. To me, 2k5 did the run game best ...it did everything right to make running the rock fun and exciting which featured rapid pressing of the button to break tackles and to sprint through holes...If madden dev's can give us simply the option for this that allows those of us that want it would be awesome...more options means a better overall experience for ALL GAMERS, period. No one is suggesting it be the only way but to give us gamers more options to fine tune our game is the only way to please everyone.

Back to the OP: I find if you want a bit more fun with running the ball in madden is to adjust some of the sliders that relate to running the ball, defenders tackling,etc..if you mess with them a bit, you can get to a point that is great. See what i mean though by more options? Sliders prove it time and time again that giving the gamer a way to customize or giving more options is key to catering to all of us. Madden dev's need to realize this and begin to add more layers of options,features that can be toggled off or on. Example...the in-game camera angles, specially for the zoom cam would be so much better to just give us a custom cam as the zoom cam is so close to being great but yet misses the mark by being too much zoomed in at times yet some times yet other times it's a tad too far off...hard to explain but i immediately see the issues with the zoom cam and it's sad to see it so close yet so far off to perfection. Giving us complete control of custom cam or giving us 4 flavors of zoom cams would be ACE.

Two things I would suggest.

1. Skills Trainer - even if you are a veteran, it's worth the investment of time. You go into the running portion and it's a breakdown of the various runs, where to break them off, where they are designed to go, etc.

2. Before every run, bring up the play art and focus on the designed aiming point of the run. Take a few games of just making sure your initial steps are to that aiming point, even if you see or want to break it elsewhere.

Every run be it power, zone, stretch, etc., has an aiming point where it's designed to hit.You'll be surprised at the results you get. Once you get comfortable with the different types of runs in your playbook you'll start to see where you can bend stuff back or break out, etc.

But you have to learn to run disciplined first.

I just got into Madden for the first time ever as I am a huge NCAA fan. I am still tweaking sliders and am working on the running game. My current rb is David Johnson Cardinals 87 overall and balanced. My oline averages 90 overall across the line. He is averaging 3.1 ypc but in real life he averages 4.8. Am I right in leaving more room as if he were a 94 he would be averaging 5.4 ypc?

Or since he is averaging 4.8 in real life, should that be my measuring stick? If I make him avg 4.8 and trade for a 94 RB would he average 5.4?
