Since M17 is around the corner in a month and a half, I thought I would share some general tips for not just M17, but for every single Madden in existence. Here are my 10 tips for every single Madden ever made:
1)
Take a look at this link ->
Understanding Coverages and Attacking Them with Passing Game Learn it, love it, appreciate it. This is a very good reference when you want to see what coverages you can use vs different formations/tendencies and come up with good situational playcalls on both sides of the ball.
2)
Create good unslideable single and dual edge heat that comes in in less than 2 seconds and make sure it's simple and fast to set up. Keep in mind that the heat must have the same look regardless of the heat from whatever formation you choose. ex: 43 Over and 43 Stack might have a different look from each other, but left edge from 43 Stack must look exactly the same as right edge and dual edge heat in that specific formation. Whatever look you give for your heat on defense, play your coverage d out of the same thing. Whenever you mix together 3-4 man rushes with mean blitzes, your opponent will be confused the whole game and won't know what to expect if you play this way.
3)
You must dictate the pace at all costs, so whatever makes your opponent uncomfortable, keep doing it until he knows how to stop it.
4)
Keep the scheme on offense and defense very simple and take every advantage of your audibles in case there's a look that you don't like. The last thing you want to have is to memorize 50 different plays you are barely knowledgeable of and hurt your brain in the process. Stick to about 3-6 formations with special utilities (such as countering the outside run or defending an empty/goalline formation) on defense while using 10-15 universal concepts that work across most formations and picking a few diverse formations in terms of how they are compressed/spread out/bunched while keeping in mind at least one good redzone formation and having those formations best fit your team's personnel and their strengths.
5)
Plays are temporary, but concepts are forever. Do everything you can to combine coverage and route concepts for both sides of the ball so that your opponent is more confused than he has ever been. In the case of offense, combine routes that beat man and zone coverage. On defense, make coverage adjustments that cover up the weaknesses of your coverage without creating more weaknesses for your coverage will benefit your defense more than it'll hurt it.
6)
Don't get pissed and go away from your scheme because of a bad break on your end. Keep calm and don't veer away from your scheme because of it. You can't change what happened before, but you can change how you react to it and overcome the adversity from it.
7)
Pretty self explanatory here.
8)
When you and your opponent are the same skill-wise and scheme-wise, it all comes down to mismatches, luck, and user skill. Perfect these and you should be almost unstoppable (I did say almost :P).
9)
Know your team and know it well. It's also good to know how your opponent is scheming. It is one of the most underappreciated tips anyone can give you, but it will help you figure out who is good to put in man/zone coverage and whether to put a pass rushing LB at DE in a 43 scheme, etc...
10)
Have fun (or at least as much fun as the random game will allow you to have). No matter what, you must do everything you can to bring fun into the game. Focus above all else on what you have to do to win, don't let someone else's cheese or a huge deficit rain on your parade; embrace it and figure out why he's doing what he's doing so you can adapt to your opponent. On top of that, you get experience so you know what to do next time you face a similar opponent.
