Game clock doesn't stop when going out of bounds

Am I crazy or probably stupid? Isn't the game clock supposed to stop when a player goes out of bounds? Because I've had several instances where balls are caught and play gets pushed out of bounds and tackled out of bounds and the clock will stop temporarily, but then once they go onto the next play, the clock starts again after they break the huddle.

Is this an issue or do I not understand the rules of football?

In the NFL the clock runs when a player goes out of bounds unless it's the final two minutes of the first half or final five minutes of the second half.

Also, If a player is fighting for extra yards and he is driven back out of bounds, he is awarded forward progress, but the clock does not stop. By the way, you're not stupid for asking a question you don't have an answer to. It's the one's who think they know it all who usually fit that bill .
