Post Launch Interview With Madden Creative Director Rex Dickson

I am making another pass through the dev team doing interviews, and I just wrapped up my interview with Rex. Some of the topics covered on this episode...

  • Thoughts on stumbling out of the blocks with Ea Access and Run/Pass Glitch.
  • The patch process and how they approached it.
  • Shift from how they define success in a launch. Move from review based goals to core sentiment feelings.
  • "Crowd sourced" development and EA's approach, specifically Madden's approach, to the player first mentality.
  • Rex explains the struggle to balance SIM, Casual, and Competitive gamers.
  • The tuning process, when to hold steady versus making changes, and how data drives these decisions. Rex specifically addressed the upcoming tuning on the fatigue bug and why it occurred.
  • Competitive gaming, and it's place in Maddens growth going forward.
  • How,and why, the Nano Detection System came to be.
  • .....I also ask him why my WR1 is on the left and not matched up against CB1 by default, and his explanation (kind of).
There was much more covered but this is a pretty good chunk of what we hit on. Let me know what you think, and if you have any other question I can try to get covered in future updates.

Side Note: Don't ask about the CFM App because there is a NDA on it so no one will be getting info on it until it officially is released by EA.

This is just some constructive criticism, but how come EA can't just make a sim, casual, and arcade mode to appease every fanbase? Seems logical. Then when you go into any mode, you can choose from sim, casual, and arcade as well.

Problem solved.

Good to hear that Metacritic isn't as big of a part of their analysis of the success of the game as it use to be.

Love Rex's comments about the run game tuning, and people complaining about the tuning "breaking the game"

The pressure from the suits to build for the casuals will always be the bane of Rex's and our existence.

His muses on esports and dice rolls, and User control was very interesting. IMO esports gaming is eventually going to have to be separated out from the base game in some way.

I'm feeling good about best on best for 18.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

NHL series has been doing this for years.

Non disclosure agreement. Basically, It means no one at EA is allowed to provide any information on the App outside of posting the link that is their company line on it for now.
