Unfortunately, the press/release interaction is the main culprit for why Man is worse in M17 than it was in M16.
With the right personnel you could run a lockdown Man/Press system in M16 and have tons of success. Yes, ultimately a really good CB even with a matchup advantage would often get 'beat' by a WR on a slant/corner/etc...but if they could press (which almost any Man corner IRL is mixing in generously), they could delay getting beat long enough for the pass rush to get home, and/or knock them way off their route. That plus shading was enough for a powerful bend-don't-break defense.
In M17, even WRs with middling release are crushing elite press corners. C1 press or C3 press is just begging for a free TD, whereas in M16 a CB with high Press & proper speed/accel would swing their hips and carry the WR downfield like they would IRL.
You can mix in Man coverage but it's much riskier than it ever was in M16.
