Sure higher speed can be a tie breaker, but for most positions on defense I'm not going to chase it.

On the defensive line I wouldn't put it as a top 5 attribute.

For example Joe Flacco has 73 speed, 81 acceleration. The acceleration allows me to usually escape the pressure long enough to get rid of the ball. I've seen guys complain that their DE has higher speed than the QB so they ask how the QB outran him, well its because of the QB's acceleration vs the acc/agi rating of the linemen.
Acceleration is king over short distances. The more ground a defender has to cover the more important speed becomes. On dline not important as well as olb. Mlb and defensive backs speed is important though. I want those players to be able to cover a lot of ground.

Unless you are a loyal Tampa 2 guy, speed is extremely important for CB.

For MLB it depends on your scheme. If you call more zone then it is not that important. But if you are asking your MLB to cover TEs and to a lesser extent HBs, then it is very important.

Usually the fastest guy in my front 7 is my Will linebacker.

Often i pick up undrafted free agents to convert to tackles.
Good advice. I use UDA quite a lot. Never pay backups a big salary.

I want to share with my 3-4 defense friends on here on how I setup my depth chart. You can do this to any team and will find GEMS deep in your depth chart as I have! I will go by position by position on what to look for each player your plugging with the highest ratings.

RE - Power moves and speed
DT- Strength
LE -Finesse moves and speed
ROLB - Man coverage
MLB's - Zone coverage
LOLB - Block shedding and speed. (all he will be doing is blitzing)
CB's -Man coverage and speed
FS - Zone coverage and hit power
SS- Zone coverage and hit power

Don't go into the Overall numbers. The ratings are the real deal when building a defense to your liking.

What playbook do you run with 3-4?

Re: Building a defense

To answer the original question, yes it does make a large difference. I would invest heavily into the secondary seeing as damn near anybody can generate pressure on the QB so paying top dollar for a pass rushing specialist seems more like a waste of money. I built up the Niners secondary and run a lot of man and through 7 games I'm #1 in pass defense and have lock down corners all over the field for the most part. Pay attention to MCV and AGI rating, look for guys who excel in both and sign them quickly.

Yeah it does seem like you can get a pass rush regardless of who is rushing the passer. A high paid secondary seems to be the best bang for your buck on defense

Pittsburgh as I am starting to run a lot of zone blitz's. I do add in as a "global" zone blitz playbook by adding formations that has a lot of zone blitz's in it.

Just curious, did you by chance get left/right mixed for DEs and LB?

Follow up would be, do you play in a online CFM?
