It was a lock that OS wouldn't take their choice well. One can vehemently disagree with their decision and their rational, but some of the accusations in this thread: arcade sports gamers, politics, payola, are, to be kind, unfortunate. If you read the piece it's clear that they are serious sports gamers whose evaluative methodology simply isn't as narrow in scope as the people here. It is what it is.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#[email protected]& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

To be clear, I asked a question; I didn’t make an accusation. I have no idea how this industry works, and I simply wondered if this sort of thing happens or has been known to happen.

I can appreciate that mine may be an ignorant or insulting question, but it was an honest one and shouldn’t be miscategorized as an accusation.

I would think they would base their sports game of the year on an aspect that has more to do with the on field product

Of course the headline is unfortunate because Madden doesn't deserve praise, but the actual article isn't so bad. They pretty much say 2K is better but sucks because of the microtransaction greed which is a fine message and I agree, I'd probably play 1000x more hours of 2k if the greed didn't seep into every minute of gameplay. I also think they overvalue The Journey and Longshot by a million but whatever that's their opinion. It seemed like a begrudging goty article where they were really unhappy no indie games could come take the title from the stale licensed big games.

Re: Polygon: Sports Game of the Year 2017 - Madden 18

I think context is important to consider here.

Polygon is a video games media outlet which covers all genres. Things which appeal to the Polygon audience aren't necessarily going to be the same things which appeal to the Operation Sports audience.

For as much as OS didn't care for Longshot, for a lot of people it provided them a way to engage with Madden at a simplified level which was compelling and interesting to them. With the exception of FIFA with its analogous Journey mode, no other sports games are attempting to broaden their audience to the extent Madden is (with respect to both story modes and simplifying gameplay for new and casual players).

Compare the focus on Longshot to the anti-consumer greed-driven angle 2K took with micro transactions in NBA 2K (and FIFA is guilty of the same thing), along with MLB The Show apparently only being an iterative improvement (speaking in broad strokes), it's pretty easy to understand why a website like Polygon would consider Madden the best sports game of the year on the back of Longshot alone.

The community here is such a small minority of the true population that plays Madden. Longshot, the competitive Madden gaming culture, and MUT are massively popular. CFM is something that is tacked on to please a small minority.

All i can think about is steering an already thrown ball around the outstretched hand of a defender being worthy of sports game of the year. How low the genre has fallen.

Politics have to be involved in this one....
To be fair, Owen Good and Samit Sakar have both been writing about sports gaming seriously for years. They have also both been on the Press Row podcast often. Good is on the most recent Press Row.

I've always liked Good's writing on sports, and I've read a ton of Sakar's writing on sports games. They are far from casuals.
