RS icon playing as a defensive back

It never occurred to me that the RS icon is something I have to do while controlling a DB when playing man defense, but I don't know how to use this. I looked it up and says to press up, down, left or right according to how the WR is running it's route. Could someone elaborate on this? It doesn't seem to work well with me. Is it timing? Do I need to just hold it down until the play finishes?

Press down at snap to jam receiver. Press it left or right to try to force him inside or outside at the snap.

Hey thanks man. I tried this through several games and i'm just not getting it. It doesn't do anything. Is it like the jump snap with DL? You have to time it right? Hold the stick down? EA gives pretty lousy tutorials online.
