I think, if an unlicensed football game were going to succeed, it has a much better chance now than it ever has in the past. With influencers, free-to-play models, and current technology, the opportunity is there.

With that being said, the stars would have to align and all would have to go extremely well for whoever attempted this to be successful, and the key part is this:

No serious investors see it being worth the investment without a license.

That right there kills pretty much any hope. To make a great simulation football game, you need a whole lot of time and a whole lot of money, and to get that, you need investors who share your vision and have deep pockets to take the ride with you.

And then there's the whole fear of legal action that also sours investors away.

Well, there's Maximum Football and Axis Football ...


but like Lexicon alluded to, they have tiny dev teams and very little budget. These 2 can't be ready to compete with Madden at this time...
