adembroski,

Yep. Pats are a historically great team.

Brady-Brees; exact same player at this point. Fine wine that is great with age... on the verge of turning..

The Patriots haven't had a great roster since 2004. Brees wins when he has a great roster. Brady wins whatever motley collection of scrubs Belichick dredges up. Brees is coached by one of the great offensive minds in the game. Belichick is a great teacher and brilliant defensive mind, but there's nothing special or innovative about the offense he runs except Tom Brady.

If we were talking 3 championships to 2, or 2 championships to 1 or something like that, fine, I'd concede not to die on that hill. 5-1, sir. 5-1. Conference championships, 8-1.

At the end of the day, the most important QB stats are wins and championships, and that's where Brady pulls away.

By this logic Eli Manning is a better QB than Brees or even Tony Romo or most player to ever play QB. To act like the Patriots are a collection of scrubs is laughable. They don't always have the star power, but they are generally a deeper team than most and it is a big reason they have had their success. That and the defense has been great more often not, just like the years Eli got carried to SB wins.

Eh. Wins and championships are team statistics, not quarterback statistics. Conflating QB skill with the team hardware on his shelf severely undermines the contributions of the coaches and the other 52 guys on the roster.

The point is when the Saints suck, Brees doesn't win. Brady has won no matter who his teammates are. Again, if we were talking 2 Superbowls and 3 Conference titles vs. 1 Superbowl and 2 Conference titles, there'd be an argument to be had. We're talking 5 and 8 to 1 and 1.

Basically, I've seen little to no evidence that Brees makes his team greater than the sum of their parts, only that his numbers stay high. It's a little like Steve Young vs. Joe Montana. Young was statistically as good or better across the board, but do you believe for a moment Young could have won a Superbowl with that '81 team? I would argue the '81 49ers had less talent than any 49ers team Young played on, and the '84 team was probably worse than most of them. '93 and '97 were arguably more talented teams than anything Montana ever had, and '94 was definitely the best team the 49ers ever had.

I've seen Brees consistently keep his own numbers up, but he doesn't elevate the team the way Brady does. Brady wins with the '81 'Niners, Brees does not. And saying Brees is like Steve Young isn't an insult, any more than saying Steve Young wasn't Joe Montana.

I don't really think your characterization of New England's roster building strategy is fair. These players aren't scrubs. They aren't all time greats, either. What they are is smart, versatile players who are capable of adapting to different schemes on the fly and installing completely new offenses with just a week of practice.

This is the real genius of Bill Belichek, imo. His teams are always built in such a way that he can counter whatever his opponent likes to do. The Pats are in no way, shape, or form wedded to a single scheme on either side of the ball.

If they face a team with a strong front 7 they'll just spread the field and throw it 50 times. Belichek laughs at OS's notions that "mixing things up" is necessary to run a successful offense. He's not going to send his RB into a brick wall for the sake of variety.

In the 00s when the Steelers had one of the premier defenses ITL, especially against the run, the Pats would throw 50 times and run about 10-15 or so every time they played them. The hooded one correctly surmised that excessive rushing attempts, especially on early downs, would just be wasted plays.

By the same token if the opponent is a squad with an undersized, passing rushing D-line and a LB corps geared toward coverage they will dust off the FB and run down your throat.

His teams have also been capable of playing multiple fronts on D going all the way back to the first title runs.
