So how should I use the ratings and schemes?

I have the schemes set to how I play (I believe), so in theory, the OVR should be accurate to help me pick the best players.

But I'm wondering if I should use the OVR to pick players off of free agency and trades, or if I should go deeper into their individual stats in order to pick the players I want or need.

The game itself seems to like using the OVR, seeing as it's what the CPU teams use to pick starters, and have it listed whenever you look at your players anywhere.

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

I think it boils down to personal preference. I tend to lean towards the highest OVR player simply because that is what dictates nearly every AI decision. I tend to try and limit myself to what the AI is capable of, but not always 100%.

At the end of the day there is no right or wrong way to play , but certainly the archetypes / scheme fit system is designed for players to use the adjusted OVRs as their primary tool when comparing players , which would include FA and trading

If you wish to look deeper you would probably want to look at specific attributes that you consider important for your scheme on a position by position basis , though to some degree at least , if your play calling matches your scheme this should be reflected by the archetype OVR your specifically encouraged to favour

If you favour usering players (over spectating ,coach mode or simming ) it might be worth going deeper at the specific positions you most frequently control , as certain attributes become less important when user controlled , and you could seek out players with lower grades in those attributes and thus be available at a lower cost
