Negotiating and signing players

I'm really struggling with trying to figure this system out. So for instance, I go into the "Re-sign" players screen and see Fair Offer: $6.51M over 3 years. 3.12M signing bonus. 9.63M Total. So if I go in, set the Salary to 6.51M and the signing bonus to 3.12M the offer I'm making is 28.5M. However, if I take that 6.51M divide it by 3, and make the salary to 2.2M and keep the signing bonus the same the offer I'm making is 15.8M.

Would someone please explain to me how this system works? I've already lost 2 of my players trying to figure it out.

The $6.51m salary and $3.12m bonus are average per year numbers not cumulative numbers across the life of the contract so you are losing players by lowballing them

The Values are per year. So (6,51 *3) + (3,12 * 3) = 25,89 total
Also: the complete signing bonus (9,36) is deducted from your cash immediatly after signing. It's hard to see your available in cash in trainer mode. So a lot of high value signings per year can be hard to finance.

So the 9.3M total is a per year number, not a total contract #?
