Re: passing and playcalling
Don't focus on the receivers as much as the windows that you expect to throw into.
1) Get your blocking sorted out. Make sure there's no free rushers. Do you need to double anyone and can you afford the extra blocker based on their look? Do you need to leave a TE or RB in to block; go max blocking?
2) How are they matching up; any obvious mismatches? Can you create a mismatch by sneaking a RB out of the backfield or changing a route; maybe put a guy in motion...
3) After the snap, I quickly scan the defensive front....are my blockers in good position relative to their rush? If so -- I might have some time to work the ball down the field. If not, I need to find my hot reads -- my short routes. Maybe I need to move in the pocket....or escape the pocket completely.
4) While scanning the rush and my blocking positions, I'm also reading the safeties, because that will often dictate where you're going with the ball.
5) At that point, I'm looking for an open window and anticipating when my receivers will enter the window and whether they'll beat the defender into the window. It's better to anticipate and throw a little early. You can adjust the throw by bullet or lob; high or low; lead or comback, etc.
6) Most importantly for me, when I'm reading the defense presnap, I'm trying to get my eyes flowing in one direction as much as possible, so I'm not looking left and right and up and down. I want to move my eyes in a flow from left to right, right to left, or short to long....there may be some moving around but generally you want a nice flow. So line up your reads -- if window 1 is closed, I'll move my eyes slight to window 2, then slightly to window 3, etc.
My two cents.
