Help. Question on series x and playing old version

Buddy of mine had the physical disk of madden and just got his new series x. When he put the disk in it seems he can only see the new version. Does anyone know how he can load the old version in so he can play his CFM games without having to play on his old xbox one x that he gave to his son.

So far the only suggestion i have heard is move the game off the old xbox to an external drive then hook that external drive up to the xbox series x. Guy i know does not have an external drive but i do think that would work if he could do that. Not sure if anyone else has found a solution.
