Kurt Benkert has been vocal ripping on Madden on zone coverages and animations and has been vocal about it on Twitter because he is playing H2H online.

Didn't Madden use to have some rudimentary animation to bat the ball backwards near the endzone on punt coverage? just another in the looooooooooooong list of regressions.

There definitely used to be a swat animation with L1 to try to hit a punted football off a bounce.

I have absolutely no idea if that is still there. Wouldn't be surprised if it disappeared after the catching controls changed and was just forgotten about, unfortunately special teams only gets touched by the Madden dev team every once in a while.

EDIT: messing around in practice mode, you can hit Triangle to jump up and attempt to swat a punted ball after it bounces off the ground once, and you can hit Square to dive once a punted ball bounces off the ground once. There is no specific "swat at punt" mechanic, though.

U can catch punts defensively as well if u get downfield before it lands. I’ve done this several times. Sometimes, it’s a goofy one handed ‘oh, hey, I caught the punt, wow’ kind of moment. Lol. But, u can def catch it with the Y button.

I’ve actually found that you’re better off not touching the gunners. Just let them do their thing and they may have actually downed that punt in the video. But, only if you don’t switch to them. However, he may have also let it bounce into the end zone before attempting a swat/save, so it’s sort of a craps shoot. But, I’ve def found that they actually tend to do the right thing if you don’t user them.

Yeah! Clint said on the podcast that it's coming in August before the game releases! Pumped for it.
