Re: Offical Minnesota Vikings Roster Project

Scouting Reports and Info. These guys have a good shot to make the team. Heath Farwell is a lock since Greenway got hurt. Kevin Kasper has been injured after having a good 1st pre-season game at KR and missed the last two. Jason Carter may be the 5th WR since KRob was released.

Kevin Kasper #17 (was in the game in past Madden’s)
6'1" 202lbs
12/23/1977
Wide Receiver | 5th year | Iowa
Pics:
http://media.scout.com/media/nfl/157473_kaspermug.jpg
http://www.nfl.com/u/nfl/photos/nfl12ce_lower.jpg
Entering Camp (From KFAN.com)
Kasper is a decent NFL wideout, with good hands and ball skills. That said, he's going to have a tough time being much more than a special teams player in Minnesota. His durability has been called into question and he's going to have to prove he can stay healthy. Kasper has averaged 24.7 yards per kick return in his career and can also cover kicks. The Vikings have a lot of wide receivers in camp, so it's going to take a solid effort at camp to ensure a spot on the roster.

Heath Farwell #59
6'0" 235lbs
Linebacker | 2nd year | San Diego State
1/31/1981
Pics:
http://media.scout.com/media/image/32/325902.jpg
http://media.scout.com/media/image/26/264081.jpg
Entering Camp (From KFAN.com) Farwell is not much of an impact player in the NFL, but he is serviceable as a third string linebacker as well as on kick coverage. His ability on special teams should keep him on the roster, but with the guys in front of him he probably won't see much of the field on defense.

Ray Edwards #91
6'5" 268lbs
1/1/1985
Defensive End | Rookie | Purdue
*Drafted in the 4th round of the 2006 draft
Pics:

http://media.scout.com/media/image/33/332512.jpg
http://media.scout.com/media/image/32/325901.jpg
Entering Camp (From KFAN.com)Edwards is a smallish defensive end with major upside as an edge pass rusher. However he needs to add bulk to his frame and work out some technique issues in order to see playing time in the NFL. The Vikings knew they would have to take their time with Edwards, and with the quality depth at his position the team can do just that. Look for Edwards to make the team but see very limited action in the regular season.
Scouting Report (From ESPN.com)
Strengths: Possesses a very good frame and long arms. Shows room left on his frame to increase his bulk. Naturally athletic DE prospect who shows enough fluidity to possibly fit as a 3-4 OLB. Shows explosive pass rush potential and should only improve with more experience and coaching. He is smooth for his size. Shows very good COD skills. Possesses adequate initial quickness and good top end speed, especially for his size. He shows the ability to turn the corner with good balance as a pass rusher and he possesses above average closing burst to the QB. He is a fluid athlete for the position and has proven capable of dropping in coverage in certain situations. He is at his best in space versus the run. Is a decent open-field tackler. Shows the ability to chase down the run from behind when he's giving good effort. Possesses adequate-to-good upper body power, which gives him the potential to improve his array of pass rush moves and also to become more effective taking on blocks versus the run if he can improve his technique.

Weaknesses: Is still a bit lean. Must improve his overall bulk and strength. Has not learned to properly use his hands in order to keep off of blocks. Plays too erect and allows OT's to get into his body too easily. Possesses a narrow base and will look like he's on skates when he doesn't play with leverage versus the run. Lacks ideal recognition skills. Will get too far upfield and take himself out of plays occasionally. Also takes too long to find the ball carrier and will struggle to disengage quickly enough. Must become more consistent versus the run. Must also improve his array of pass rush moves. He can be dominant at times but will disappear at others. Needs to play with more consistency.

Overall: Edwards played in all 13 games at defensive end as a true freshman in 2003, when he finished with 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He had a breakout sophomore season in 2004, when started all 12 games and piled up 45 tackles, 11 TFL and eight sacks. Edwards started all 11 games at RDE for the Boilermakers as a junior in 2005 and finished with 28 tackles, 11 TFL, 5.5 sacks and one interception. Edwards is a rangy, athletically gifted rush-end prospect that flashed a good deal of playmaking ability during his three seasons at Purdue. He is fluid enough to potentially spend some time dropping into coverage as a 3-4 OLB type and he also has the room on his frame to bulk up and improve his strength in order to play a more traditional DE role in a 4-3 alignment. Edwards had his best season as a sophomore in 2004 but regressed a bit during his junior season, which is why his decision to turn pro was a bit surprising. In fact, Edwards wasn't even the best defensive lineman on his team in 2005, as the far less talented DE Rob Ninkovich provided far more production. The team that drafts Edwards will need to be patient with him in order to give him the necessary time to improve his bulk, get stronger and polish his technique. However, Edwards' upside is great enough to warrant late-second round consideration in the 2006 draft.
Scouting Report (From Foxsports.com)
OVERVIEW
Edwards is an excellent edge rusher with impressive quickness and lateral agility. He shared strong-side defensive end duties with Rob Ninkovich as a junior and the tandem combined for 13.5 quarterback sacks and 28 stops behind the line of scrimmage during the 2005 season. Edwards was rated the ninth-best player in Ohio and ranked as the 16th-best strong-side defensive end nationally by Rivals.com as a senior at Woodward High School. He was a Midwest Top 25 choice by Super Prep and listed as the No. 14 defensive end by Tom Lemming. He added first-team All-State honors and was named the league's Player of the Year as a senior linebacker after recording 110 tackles, including 12 sacks, with seven forced fumbles and five pass breakups. He had 105 tackles, including 12 sacks, his junior season. The four-year starter also played tight end. Edwards was primarily used as a third-down passing specialist as a true freshman at Purdue in 2003. He was named to the Big Ten Conference All-Freshman team by The Sporting News after posting ten tackles (7 solos) with 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery. He was a Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award semifinalist in 2004, as he totaled 45 tackles (23 solos), tied for second in the Big Ten with eight sacks and produced eleven stops for losses. He also caused two fumbles, recovered another and deflected four passes. In 2005, he started the first six games at strong-side defensive end before giving way to Ninkovich the second half of the season. He finished with 28 tackles (22 solos), 5.5 sacks and eleven stops behind the line of scrimmage. He also intercepted a pass and batted away another. In 36 games with the Boilermakers, Edwards started eighteen times. He finished his career with 83 tackles (52 solos), 16 sacks for minus-125 yards and 24.5 stops for losses of 140 yards. He caused and recovered two fumbles, picked off a pass and deflected five others.
ANALYSIS Positives: Has a lean, linear build with room on his frame to add needed bulk with no loss of speed...Has long arms, good upper body muscle tone and broad shoulders...Has some explosion coming off the edge to gain advantage...In run force, he does an adequate job playing off the tight end...Flashes the ability to slip past the slower offensive tackles and if given an unimpeded lane, he can flush out and close on the quarterback in an instant... Can make plays working down the line, but is best when coming off the edge...Maintains balance turning the corner and has the burst to chase down ballcarriers along the perimeter...Has better leverage than strength...Has the body control and lateral moves to extend and slide outside.
Negatives: Needs to add lower body strength, as he does not have the strong base needed to anchor and struggles to defeat double teams...Not the most instinctive player around and needs to show better ball location skills...Has the speed to possibly shift to linebacker at the next level, but lacks the valid instincts and feel for the passing game to be much of a factor in that role...When he plays too high, blockers easily get into his body and wash him out of the play...Better player in games than practices...Will throttle down and give up on the play when his initial move fails...Lacks rip and club moves needed for the bull rush...Must be more active with his hands playing off blocks...Has an adequate work ethic and needs to be pushed to get the best out of his ability (lost starting job midway through the 2005 season due to inconsistent play). Edwards has a lean, linear build with room on his frame to add additional bulk. He has good upper body muscle definition, long arms and tight waist and hips, but needs to develop better leg strength. He has good quickness, agility and balance, showing decent knee bend in his rush off the edge and shows a burst to close on the quarterback. He consistently moves forward coming off the snap and has the acceleration to quickly turn the corner. He needs to demonstrate better ball location, but is improving. He has the loose hips to drop back into the second level, but lacks the valid instincts to possibly shift to linebacker in a 3-4 alignment. He plays off the tight end well, but struggles when taking offensive tackles head on. He can make plays in pursuit, but gets thrown around and shoved out of the inside gaps due to a lack of lower body strength to stack and shed when working in-line. He has better leverage than strength when attempting to anchor vs. double teams, but does a poor job of holding his ground. He needs to stay down in his pads to play with leverage, as he does not demonstrate the brute strength to hold the point. He still needs to generate better hand usage to defeat blocks, as he leaves his body exposed and does not always keep blockers away. His pursuit speed is valid, but he does a marginal job of redirecting. When he over-pursues the play, which happened too often in 2005, he will generally wash out and throttle down. Edwards has the tools to be a very capable situational edge rusher at the next level, but he is basically and arm tackler who needs to do a better job of brining his hips to square and wrap up. He has a sudden step to get into the backfield, but needs to be more active with his hands in attempts to get off blocks. He struggles once he is engaged and can't free up, which will limit his playing time at the next level to pass rushing chores until he can add more bulk and strength and display better aggression vs. double teams. His pass rush moves are generated mostly by his burst. He needs to be freed up in order to get to the passer and really has not developed the rip and swim moves to defeat the tackle on a regular basis. If the blocker gets into his body, the battle is quickly over. He gets most of his sacks when he has an unimpeded line to the ball, but does show the short area explosiveness to close and the long arms to engulf. Edwards certainly could have used another year to develop, both physically and mentally. He is strictly an edge rusher who needs a free lane to succeed. He offers marginal value vs. the run and is slow to digest the action around him. Considering he lost his starting job the second half of 2005 indicates that his learning curve will be a big concern. He has the frame to add more bulk, but he never has been a workout warrior and his work ethic needs to be addressed, as he does disappear for long stretches on the field. Still, it is his quickness and athletic ability that will impress some pro team.
AGILITY TESTS Campus: 4.73 in the 40-yard dash...325-pound bench press...33.5-inch vertical jump.

Interesting prospect coming off a bad season who have been in better shape staying in school. Decent playmaker with good speed and balance. Needs to improve his playing strength to be successful at the NFL level.

Jason Carter #11
6'0" 205lbs
9/15/1982
Wide Receiver | Rookie | Texas A&M
*Aquired as an undrafted free agent in 2006
Pics:

http://www.centralmediaserver.com/kfan/carter330.jpg

Entering Camp (From KFAN.com)Carter could prove to be a valuable player for the Vikings, provided he shows what he's capable of during camp. He is a tough runner who plays hard and isn't afraid to take a hit. He has a lot of experience returning and covering kicks, and if he makes the team he'll do so in that capacity. Also, Carter does have some experience playing quarterback and could be used to run the occasional gadget play.
Scouting Report (From ESPN.com)
Strengths: Possesses adequate quickness, can change directions quickly and has the potential to develop into a crisp short-to-intermediate route-runner. Has adequate bulk, uses frame to shield defenders from the ball and has the potential to develop into a productive red zone target. Shows good vision, runs with a low center of gravity and is a powerful open field runner that can be productive after the catch. Plays with a mean streak, shows good power at the point of attack and is an aggressive blocker that looks to sustain the block once in position. Has some experience playing quarterback and can be used to run gadget plays. Has extensive experience returning kicks, has the motor to cover kicks and can contribute on special teams.
Weaknesses: Doesn't show a second gear when tracking the ball downfield and has some problems locating balls thrown over shoulder. While shows adequate quickness, footwork is inconsistent and rounds off too many cuts. Doesn't catch the ball way from frame and drops too many passes that should catch. Doesn't use hands all that well and has some problems getting a clean release working against press coverage. Doesn't always find the soft spot working against zone coverage, appears hesitant to go over the middle at times and doesn't appear to read defenses well despite experience at quarterback. Lacks ideal top-end speed and isn't going to outrun defenses when gets a seam.

Overall: Carter was a partial qualifier in 2001 so Texas A&M red-shirted him. He appeared in two games at quarterback in 2002. Carter attempted one pass and carried the ball five times for a total of 56 yards and a touchdown. He also retuned four punts for a total of 22 yards and five kickoffs for a total of 104 yards. Carter primarily lined up at receiver in the eleven games he played in during the 2003 season but he also saw some time at running back including one start. He caught 12 passes for a total of 162 yards and he carried the ball seven times for a total of 128 yards and one touchdown. Carter also completed a 46-yard pass, returned 12 punts for a total of 85 yards and returned seven kickoffs for a total of 199 yards and a touchdown that year. He started five of the 12 games he appeared in during the 2004 season primarily lining up at receiver once again and he caught 36 passes for a total of 468 yards. Carter also carried the ball nine times for a total of 68 yards and three touchdowns, he returned 18 kickoffs for a total of 330 yard and he completed one of his two passes for a 23-yard touchdown. He was arrested for disorderly conduct in February of 2005. Carter started seven of the 11 games he appeared in during the 2005 season and he caught 54 passes for a total of 827 yards and six touchdowns. He also carried the ball 17 times for a total of 99 yards, attempted one pass, returned 18 kickoffs for a total of 334 yards Carter is a developmental prospect that needs to wok on his release, route running and hands before he'll even be ready to compete for playing time at receiver in the NFL. However, he is strong, fluid, elusive and versatile.

I'm just gonna wait for EA's update, since the Vikings aren't the only team with completely FUBAR rosters.

Re: Offical Minnesota Vikings Roster Project

The Vikings traded for quarterback Brooks Bollinger from the New York Jets. The deal sends DT C.J. Mosley to the Jets.

Mosley and a draft choice...great move for the Jets, and a decent one for the Vikes....Jets add much needed depth at DT, and the vikes may have found a reason to release Mike McMahon with this trade!
