I started editing (again because I first began when I learned that the Draft Acquistion info wouldn't be affected by patch #2), after update #3 (last Friday) and I finished after the 2nd patch was released. If you're asking about progression/regression, it does occur.
For the formation sub info, some of it was acquired from basically watching games (Michael Pittman being goalline back, LJ not being trusted to block on passing downs, Justin Tuck and the 4 Aces package from last year, Charles Ali/Browns FB, is used for short yardage blocking...etc). Some was included in the Scouts Inc, analysis reports, some was in The Pro Football Prospectus 2008, and most of the SE/FL WR designations were in Scientific Football 2008 (KC Joyner sends a Fantasy Draft guide listing who played what for matchup purposes).
Alot of the playmaking 3-4 inside linebackers actually play on the weak side (with a stout linebacker on the interior strong side to contest O-Linemen, making it necessary to have a double team commanding NT for the defense to work effectively), which is the #2 position on the Madden depth chart. If they are in the #2 slot, then they won't get the stats generated from the #1 spot. Therefore, I put them in the #1 MLB spot in the depth chart for stat purposes, and placed them on the weak side (of the interior) for actual gameplaying purposes.
Some players on Defense are considered 2-down players (great at stopping the run, shaky when it comes to pass situations). KGB, Robert Mathis, Mark Anderson, Chris Clemons, Dumervil, and a few others are included on Nickel & Dime packages with a larger player on the base defense formations. More WR's than you may think, actually get alot of their success from getting matched up against non-cornerbacks. Anquan Boldin has demonstrated less than great metrics when matched up with a good cornerback while his counterpart Larry Fitzgerald puts up great numbers (metrically) against any level of competition. In KC Joyner's words, he's "Matchup Agnostic", which is probably a reason why he got the money extension while Anquan wants a new deal. Not sure if you watched the NFL Countdown this past Sunday when they were both interviewed and he admitted that Fitz was the best WR on the team. Then he said that he's not even a WR and just a football player, a beast that can physically dominate a matchup in his favor. Not sure if it was something that helps his case for a top WR contract, but he spoke the truth. Anyway, I know this was way longer than you probably expected in response, but I hope I answered your question somewhere along the way. LoL
