Re: Bill's Realism Sliders (only Coach Mode for now)

Bill, as always I do so enjoy using your sliders. I was planning on just waiting for your non-coach slider set, but found that I hadn't played Madden in well over a week and figured I'd give coach mode a try. I'm actually thinking I might just stick with coach mode from here on out. It plays much more like Head Coach, which I actually prefer nowadays. I like putting teams together and seeing how they play.

Anyway, I played through the preseason as the Ravens and ended up 3-1 (Panthers 16 @ Ravens 30; Ravens 45 @ Redskins 3; Giants 17 @ Ravens 16; Ravens 26 & Rams 0). For the most part I think the scores reflect the team ratings and make a lot of sense. Technically the score should've been 38-3 against the Redskins, but I threw a Hail Mary at the end of the game for no particular reason and that ended up a touchdown.

I utilized Game Flow for almost every game, but would always wait until 35 seconds were on the clock before hitting the button to allow the timer to drop to 20 seconds. I ended up averaging 118 plays a game. I would stick to the game plan and rarely audible out of it unless there was a horrible mismatch. Basically, I didn't try and exploit the game by constantly calling audibles into a slant pattern or whatever.

I don't want to get into passing and running stats too much since the preseason is a bit of a mess, but the Ravens threw 11 tds to 0 int. The opposing teams threw 1 td to 2 int. The Ravens had more throwing tds than I would've expected, but part of that, I believe, is that I need to keep tweaking the gameplanning. But the lack of interceptions was appalling, on both sides of the board. I mean, we're talking about preseason with 1st, 2nd and 3rd stringers in there (though that's true on both sides of the ball). I know we need to expect a fair amount of dropped interceptions in the game in order to make it play realistically, even if it looks absurd, but the fact that the Ravens didn't throw a single interception boggles my mind.

Sack numbers seem okay if a little low, but part of that is the issue with QBs getting rid of the ball while practically being on the ground. For now, the numbers are okay.

I had 0 touchbacks. I didn't have too much wind in my games to help sail a ball into an endzone, but even using a kicker with 94 power for kickoffs he barely managed to get the ball past the goal line and that was with the help of wind. I think I'm going to bump kickoff power up to 35. I was using that before and you could get touchbacks, but for the most part the ball was still being brought out if it went over the goaline.

I'll wait until a few games into the regular season to pass judgment on other aspects. I'll also post up stat sheets using the OS table generators.

Note: I added 3 or 4 players to the Ravens and dropped some others. I was replacing backups, basically. I didn't "cheat" and add all the top ranked guys either, I looked for younger guys with some possible upside. For instance I dropped my 4th TE and added a backup LG, even though he's a 3rd of 4th string backup. Again, I didn't try and game the system, but created more even depth from the default roster.

Notes: Total Sacks - Ravens 4, Jets 1. QBs comp% was down, a lot of throws while being hit. Again, no touchbacks. One major injury for Ravens. Plenty of minor.

Re: Bill's Realism Sliders (only Coach Mode for now)

What I have been doing to solve kicking issues (ie returns, FG's) is to supersim those plays. Works out good and gives me some bigger punt/kick off returns.

With my Bronco's franchise my passing game is terrible. I'm wondering how you guys get these statistics. It is normal for me to have as many completed passes as times my quarterback is sacked. It seems like every throw my quarterback is getting hit and it results in an incompletion. Any ideas?

Blitzing the quarterback is also very effective for my defense, and is resulting in bad passing numbers for my opponent. They will hit maybe one or two big passing plays a game that result in most of their yardage.

I ran this game with a few changes to the sliders. My concern with all of the boxscore I have seen is the CPU QB accuracy. In most case the completion % was near 50% or lower regardless of the QB. I bumped the CPU QB Accuracy to 23. CPU WR Catch to 48. Broken Tackles for Hum/CPU to 25. CPU Fumbles to 34.

Although the rushing looks high, a couple times I was caught in a bad defense against where J. Jones ran for 9 -15 yds. Also Denver's run defense is not great (and there were a few injures). Before the OT K. Moreno was 22-103 yds, which I think is Ok versus a bad Seattle defense. The 76 yd run in OT, Seattle blitzed from the outside and the safety was out of position and Moreno was not touched. There were only 3 broken tackles between Moreno and Jones. Overall, I was pleased with the modest changes. I am going to test playing against P. Manning and see if the Comp % makes sense. Part of the problem is the Hasselback threw it deep 5 or 6 times.

Re: Bill's Realism Sliders (only Coach Mode for now)

Changes to the base set:

15 min. qtrs, 25 second runoff

Fatigue 62 (give me a good split of RB carries with RB sub at 89/92

Injuries: 40 (was alreading seeing enough)

I don’t know if I’ve ever been sold on a set of sliders after one game, but I’m very pleased with the results I got from the first game:

Vikings 20, Saints (CPU) 19

I love it when neither team scores more than 20 points. This one could have been 21-20, with each team failing on a two point conversion- the Saints first in trying to make the score 21-14. A 3 yard run by Toby Gerhart with 57 seconds left in the third quarter held up as the winning score, but the Vikings would not have won without a 60 yard pick-six by Lito Sheppard in the second quarter. The game had a good ebb and flow to it. Nothing was too easy, but neither was anything maddeningly difficult. I had a solid running game and Favre was efficient, allowing me to dominate time of possession without running up the score. Although Gerhart end up with a modest 3.7 ypc, he was beastly in the final clock-killing drive against a worn out New Orleans defense.
