I first remember getting FIFA 96 for Super NES, then FIFA 97 for PSX. Both games had licensing, but could rightly be described as a "technology test". Then came the awesome Road to World Cup 98 which I still enjoy to this day. The subsequent FIFA 99 game was OK and dealt with club teams but not on the level of 98 (the term ping pong originated here). Then with the licenses intact FIFAs 2000 to present have been different degrees of mediocre. Konami with less licensing (though they have workarounds) have kicked EA butt in soccer video games. The same may happen to EA in a few years w/Madden; it'll just become a symbol of mediocrity. That's why the exclusivity. So that NFl can sucker EA into giving away 300 MILLION dollars. And now to my calculations EA have to move a bunch of Maddens just to break even. Amen?

Amen.
I have heard some reports stating this deal could cost EA almost $500 million. If they don't see a significant increase in sales during this agreement, I would be sure there won't be one in 2011.

Jeff - Fifa in the millenium is another good example of a mediocre game that sells well because of an exclusive licence. Thankfully the European market is receptive to non licenced games which enabled Konami to prosper (although having to put a referee on the cover last year was dreadful !!). I fear that the US market for a non NFL licenced football game will not support Sega / ESPN as credible competition for EA.
