Madden "Lagging"

I've been experiencing some trouble with my Madden game. It never freezes but sometimes it moves real slow. Sometimes it does it at the beginning of the game when the players come out for the coin toss. But most of the time, it happens when the players break from the huddle and head to the line of scrimmage. It also happens in the middle of the play sometimes and it can throw off the timing. My PS2 is about 3 years old. I read somewhere that buying the newer, slimmer version will correct this problem (figures... of course they want more $$$). Is this the case? I was going to go out and buy it but I'm not going to unless I know for a fact it will be better. Why spend the money if it's gonna be the same? Thanks in advance.
