Because most CBs in the NFL can only play one side of the field. This also makes the defensive matchup screen very unrealistic because having one CB defend a certain receiver all game rarely happens in the NFL.

yes it does usually happen in the NFL. for example on sunday night, Charles Woodson covered Tony Gonzalez and other teams do it as well. In the older Maddens there was a LCB and RCB position. And most if all CB's in the NFL can play both positions. Thats why they're in the pro's.

Actually DBs move all over nowadays being that players have been getting bigger and faster..... ou see players move from the left or the right to Free safety or from free to strong in many packages safties move into nickel spots to support the run New England does this alot thats how Eugene Wilson became the starting safey he started out as a cornerback.... There aren't really that many one dimensional DBs any more like a Roy Williams and he even plays another role in some packages he plays a Rover/Linebacker....

Why would the raiders do this? Because if it's a run play, then you got your CB lined up where the linebacker should be and that can't be good for stopping the run.

No one ever said it's the smartest thing to do.. just that it does get done.

There is usually LCB or RCB on depth charts.

I have never heard of guys only being left or right corners though.

its true in some cases, especially with some vets, im a dolphins fan i know Madison only plays one side of the field, cant remember which tho, i just smh sometimes when we are playing teams with one good receiver and hes not covering him, its a comfort zone kinda thing i guess

Re: shouldn't left cornerback & right cornerback be separate positions?

Even though some teams do have just a left cb and a right cb, they really don't have to because of these reasons:
1. depending on the coverage (man or zone) and where your help comes from (over the top inside/outside or underneath) the corners leverage changes, so he needs to be able to flip his hips both ways no matter what
2. because of the wider hashmarks in college, most teams use a short-field or boundary corner and wide-field or field corner. Normally short-corners are good run-stoppers and get help from the safety because there is less field to cover into the sidelines, while wide-corners are usually the better cover guy, since there is more space to his side. So corners come to the NFL already playing on both sides.
3. Most teams will match-up their best corner on the offense's best receiver if there is a big difference in the talent level of the corners or WR's. The Dolphins don't really have to do this because both of their corner's are of the shut down variety, but if one of them got hurt, I guarantee you they would do it too.
