My brothers and I have been playing with the rule that unless it's two minutes left in each half or you're under a substantial deficit, you can't go for it on 4th & 6 or more.

We've been doing it that way for years, and it's great.

Makes sense to me, good system. About the only real flaw there though is if you're at your opponents 40 or whatever, just out of FG range and it's 4th and inches, a lot of people would go for it there and not many would call it cheese. But yeah for the most part that covers it fairly good.
