Why does the casual gamer matter?

With Madden anyways. They continue to create a game that is accessible to the casual gamer. But my question is, What does the casual gamer really want. My answer is product visibilty, simple controls, good graphics, and a resemblance of the sport they are playing. What are difficulty levels for? Why not have simple/advanced control sets?

As far as the opening question, I know they matter in sales but don't you want the casual fan to become hardcore. Casual fan may buy every other year. Hardcore buys every year. With renting more popular, the casual fan could just rent it. I really feel like you can cater to the hardcore with every facet of the title and just have a separate controls for the casual fan. I know it may not be that easy but stop w/ the casual fan excuse for not advancing gameplay.

People have been purchasing EA games because they were the most visible and consistent sport game developer. Now with 2k getting more shine (with a hardcore driven title) and getting some brand visibility and preference...Tiburon just needs to step it up.

Re: Why does the casual gamer matter?

Because if you gear a game towards the hardcore, the people that just want to pick up the game and run for 400 yards on 5 carries will get mad and not buy the game, decreasing revenue and therefore decreasing profit.

I understand what you mean with the two sets... but I mean, honestly... that's like programming two games for the price of one.

That's not going to happen ever.

Exactly. I know people that are "into" football and think Madden is the second coming next to the real thing. It annoys the crap out of me,but this is the majority of the fanbase. And as long as these people are punking out the cash-they are gonna get their 'one step above NFL Blitz" gameplay. It's funny that you can get a race game that has arcade or sim options-no problem- but football-nah. No pro football on video for me this year-first time since Madden started-thanks EA-

people here and every other Madden / football game message board that complain and want 100% sim game are the minority. It's a simple fact.

If you've ever lived in a college dorm you know exactly how few people care about the game playing like a pure sim... if you care you're probably the one.

Exactly. Its just a natural law with anything. The hard core are at the end of the bell curve. Besides, they don't sell 4 million copies of Madden to hardcore gamers, they are to the masses. The goal for every development team is to sell as many games as possible and targeting the average or casual gamer is the best way to do it. That doesn't mean that Madden isn't for hardcore fans though. Its why they create different difficulty levels and have sliders. I get annoyed by people that suggest that the less intelligent sports fans play the EA games just because they personally don't like them.
