Madden 08 Sales Have Fallen 48% from Madden 07

I think the biggest reasons for this are particular to the sports gaming genre. First, alot of people have not moved up, but at the same time, they didn't bother purchasing 08 for the PS2 because frankly it's a roster update with weapon icons.

Another reason and this is just for me, I don't know about anyone else but I think sports games in general are selling poorly. The developers were not ready for the jump and frankly to me they are only giving us what we already had - graphics aside of course. But this time the price of admission is 10 to 20 dollars higher.

I do think this may have an effect, but as an above poster said, it will be more on advertising or a brand new 'special feature' than anything else. Remember weapons? They weren't even in the main advertising.

I only skimmed the article so I could be way off base, but I think what he's saying is these numbers are ONLY comparing sales from Sept 06 and Sept 07.

If that is the comparison, it's a pretty poor way to analyze sales data. Maybe more sales were made in prior months in 07 as compared to 06? The sample size is too small.

Regardless, EA needs to step up their Madden game. I often bash 2K for the terrible baseball game they released in 2K6 and IMO the semi-poor game they released in 2K7 (yes, post patch is still poor IMO). The big difference is I see where that game has improved and can see how good it could be in a year or 2 with a little more time/effort. With Madden, I don't see that.

There was an article in Barron's recently that interviewed an investor and he was bearish on EA because their football games are tired franchises. This data reflects that. I tried to make this point a couple years ago but I was a bit early. Madden NFL football is basically the same game since 2001 with some new features. Eventually people get bored with it and move on.
