Well, VY hadn't proven a whole lot yet either. If you recall, EA said last year after announcing VY was on the cover of 08 that they might start looking at more up and coming players, to try and disprove the cover curse (probably had another official reason but that was the suggested reasoning by an EA rep IIRC). When you look back, they did seem to have a thing for featuring veteran players on the verge of breaking down/dropping off in production etc.
