How does the CPU pick defensive plays?

This is a question that I've wondered about with Madden for a long time. I feel like a huge part of the game of football is to outsmart your opponent as much as outplay them. OK, yeah, of course you can line up 4 wide and run it up the gut and a lot of times the cpu will be in a 4-5 DB coverage and you can get yards ... that's not the kind of outsmarting i'm talking about.

For example: I'll run it on first down three times in a row. Does the CPU take that into account when i get the ball the 4th time and go playaction? Or do they take into account that that would be the perfect time to go playaction and are ready for it?

Or does the CPU just pick a play based on my current formation and some kind of probability that i'll be running or passing ... ?

anyway, hope this hasn't been discussed to death already and i just missed it.

Always wondered this myself.
I guess only a dev could answer where we can only guess but I'm sure you're on the right lines.

I'll be watching this thread
