Madden Gameplay Tips (newbie)

I'm new to Madden, but not football, so I know how to play. But I did have a few questions about the gameplay mechanics.

Hit Stick - when ur coming at someone horizontally, do u still hit the stick up and down, or left right?

Running - how come stiff arms and trucking moves don't work in games, when on the Virtual Madden, I do it so easily?

hit stick - press up to tackle high, down to take out the ball carriers legs.

running - the success of a special move is determined by some formula that considers the ball carrier's stiff arm, elusiveness, spin, juke, and break tackle ratings vs the tackler's strength, tackle, and hit power ratings.

Madden is a vertical game, so ur saying if I'm attempting to tackle someone from the side, up/down is all that works?

I understand the running mechanics, but if I'm using Adrian Peterson, I can't truck a cornerback...wassup with that?

you can also just run the defender into the ballcarrier, or press square to dive, or x to strip the ball -- but up on the hitstick is a high hit, down on the hitstick is a low hit.

uhm, dunno -- maybe it's a timing issue. I know I can do it w/Maroney, so it's in there...
