Releasing NFL greats

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you release NFL greats (Barry Sanders, Joe Montana, etc) in the middle of a season or whenever the case may be, that means that your putting them into the free agent pool for acquisition during the next draft?

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Can I edit their player ratings? I do want them to be good, but not 99 overall.

I admit I viewed this but didn't answer simply because I never released one of the greats. There are too many 90+ players in the league as you move through franchise with not enough regression and injuries. So the need to add another wouldn't make too much sense. Though, it would be nice to play with "Sweetness" as my RB which I might do once Matt Forte retires from my chise.

Yea, dont really need to many stellar players like that. If it does what I think, I'll probably start releasing 1 great per season.
