Re: What presentaion aspects do you want to see in Madden 2010?
My sentiment about Madden's presentation has always been to make it as cinematic as possible. I agree with guys who say "Make it like ESPN". If I could throw two cents onto that table - I'd love for in-game to be like ESPN, and Replay Mode to be like NFL Films.
Overall, I think Madden could do a few things to quiet the presentation discussion for years. Other video games go about creating an immersive world that the game takes place in. Though 09 was a great visual improvement in terms of lighting, Madden can take a few more steps to elevate itself to the level of it's Next-Gen competition.
GTAIV, Gears of War, Call of Duty - all of these games give the player a feeling of participating in a grand story played out in a 'world' with very consistent art direction and story - a creative assault on the gamer. You're playing alongside other characters that feel real in situations that are elevated to hyper-reality. Just like an NFL Football Player.
The knee-jerk reaction would be to say that 'Madden has no story to immerse the player into'. I argue that Madden, and the drama of football, has the potential to give players that satisfying 'movie-like' experience of story and sensory overload with each game we play. All it takes is an attention to detail.
The first thing to do would be ground the game into a reality that we can all relate to. Games should have the feeling that they're being played on earth. Outdoor games should have lighting that progresses in intensity, direction and color throughout the course of the game. Weather games should have a weather cycle. (Rain showers that come and go, wind that changes direction) Birds really do exist in stadiums. Rain, snow, mud - all of it should be real and accumulate on the camera's lens. Having to look THROUGH water to see the game? That's immersion.
Apparently this year Tiburon's gotten the message on the sidelines - chain gangs, photographers and cheerleaders go a long way to adding to the drama and intensity of the game. Having a real officiating crew on the field is going to be a great improvement to see as well. One of the little touches of the detail the 2k and Blitz series did that I thought was cool is player dialogue/sync sound. When dudes get hurt, I should hear them scream in pain during their cutscenes. (Ian, sadly you know about injuries and pain this year - share that with the team.) If a player is on the sidelines clapping his hands, I should hear him clapping. It sounds nuts but I want to be able to tell which official is blowing his whistle.
Video games can deliver these types of things - these little details draw gamers like me INTO the game. Admittedly its not for everyone, but I've never heard a guy complain "This is too cool and immersive for me to play, sorry".
Finally - one last thing just for me: On the field, I'd love to see a return of the Line of Scrimmage - the Blue Line from CBS. Please? With an option to disable.
Happy Thanksgiving
